Jobst Brandt, who literally wrote the book on bicycle wheels (It's called "The Bicycle Wheel" and is
available at Fine Jungles Everywhere), says butted spokes build stronger wheels because they stretch
more for a given amount of load, which makes them retain their tension better. I'm probably
simplifying or getting it wrong a bit.

But DT Swiss and Wheelsmith both seem to make great spokes.

hmmmmmmmmm, wheelsmith, i heard from a friend they lose strength if overtightened by 1 ft/lb. he is
a great wheel builder to.

what about the double butted verse straight gauge? i heard there is an expert on this site full of
RACER experts so i think im in the right location?

The greater elasticity spreads the load across more spokes. That's good for the spokes and would
make them less inclined to unwind. Then again, I don't really know either. I just follow the
instructions from folks who know more than me and things seem to work well.

I've had no-name straight gauge stainless, probably Japanese, that didn't break. DT and WheelSmith
are very good.
