One the few pleasures of flying between Edinburgh and London is that you usually go over the Lake District. I noticed something I hadn't spotted before. The area between Windermere and I suppose Kendal and south of that line seems to be made up of lots of short ridges running E-W. Does anyone know the technical explanation of these?

Somewhere far back in the dim distant past we studied this in O Level Geography as a good example of a glaciated landscape.

The area at the head of the Lyth Valley between Bowness, Staveley, Underbarrow and Crosthwaite?
I'd say it was down to the underlying geology (Silurian limestone) causing the streams to cut E-W valleys. -- Phil Cook looking north over the park to the "Westminster Gasworks"

Immediately east of Kendal is a faulted limestone ridge, but that runs N-S. Towards Windermere (the lake) is an area with WSW-ENE lineaments. I'd guess that these correspond to harder and softer beds in the underlying Silurian sediments. (It's the wrong direction for it to be the result of subglacial erosion.) -- Stewart Robert Hinsley

Thanks for all the replies. Some kind of exposed strata, subsequently covered with grass would be a good description. In the early morning sun the lines were well pronounced. More so over the hillocks in that relatively low-lying land.
