  1. This is an audio recording of Lynn Cox (Bering Strait, Antarctica
swimmer) being interviewed by Diane Nyad. It's plugging her book
"Swimming to Antarctica." Not much in the way of swimming specifics in
the interview, unfortunately, but reasonably interesting nonetheless:

Thanks for the link. Also, not to be pedantic but just to help anyone who might search for this
online, her name is spelled Lynne.

    Good point Mark, thanks.

Lynne Cox was also interviewed by Leonard Lopate on WNYC-FM, the New York City NPR station, on
January 15, 2004. The interview is available in real-audio format in the archive for the Leonard
Lopate show on the WNYC web site. (wnyc.orgwnyc.org).

An easy way to go right to the interview is to Google "Lynne Cox" WNYC.

Leonard Lopate is a superb interviewer.

  5. Lynne was also interviewed on NPR's Talk of the Nation today (Tues, Feb. 10). She said that she lost
all feeling in her hands and feet for a period of 9 MONTHS following her Anarctic swim in sub-
freezing temperature water (ocean water remains liquid below 0 degrees celsius because of the salt).
She also said that she practiced swimming with her head up out of the water for months before the
swim, because she wanted to minimize the loss of heat through her head. This explains why she didn't
exactly have classic technique in the clips of the swim which were televised earlier. Also calls
attention to a heretofore undisclosed disadvantage of "TI" style swimming. Perhaps a warning label
    is in order.

I'm thinking that the interview will probably be available for listening on the NPR website npr.org

I'll remember that at the next Masters meet in Antarctica.;-)

Does it follow then that I should keep my head down when I make my swim across Old Faithful? :-)
