  1. My latest problem/frustration is eating in oatmeal in restaurants.

Yesterday I go to my usual joint for breakfast and have oatmeal. At 1 hour I'm 186, 2 hour 110.

    Today, I do the same thing (same dose, 10 u Novolog). At 1 hour I'm 86, 2 hour 47.

    I either need to:
    A. Stop eating in restaurants (impossible).
    B. Carry a scale with me (highly unlikely)
    C. Switch to all prepackaged foods (Yuck!)

Damn! DM is frustrating. Or, depending on your point of view, intellectually challenging.

The way I see it you have another option as well; Stop eating oatmeal in restaurents.

The first ten years of your life you try to be just like your parents. Then for then years you try
to be as little as your parents as possible. Then you gradually change in to them.

Yep. What's the fascination with oatmeal? Try ham and eggs and you won't even need as much of a dose
(I'm T2 so I may be wrong there). Incidentally, you'll probably find the first restaurant added
    sugar in the cooking.

What's the difficulty with cooking breakfast at home before you go? Is there a reason for the
"impossibility" or is it just convenience?

Before I was diagnosed I used to cook porridge (oatmeal) in the microwave. From memory, 1/2 cup of
rolled oats, 1 cup of water and a sprinkling of raisins. Microwave in a bowl on high for about 5
minutes. Experiment because microwaves have different powers.

Stir well - and you've got breakfast cooked while you shaved. Unfortunately, the only oats I can eat
now are in my bedtime muesli.

I should think oatmeal is one of those things that would vary from place to place. You don't know if
they used the instant or the whole kind or if it contains sweetener. The only things I order for
breakfast at a restaurant are toast, English Muffin, hash browns, eggs, bacon or sausage, but not
all in one meal. Most often, I'll order just toast or an English Muffin. I'll get a kid's meal for
my daughter that comes with scrambled eggs. She doesn't care for scrambled eggs, so I'll eat all or
most of hers. Works for me!

I eat oatmeal for breakfast almost every day of the year. I prefer the Old Fashioned, coarse-
ground variety because it doesn't raise my blood sugar as high as the new-fangled, Quick-cooking,
more finely-ground variety. Interesting that I can usually get away with 8 units Humalog for the
    old-fashioned variety.

Wonder which variety your two restaurants were serving?

    Howdy Jon,

Well there could be an number of things happening here. One could be some of the resturants you eat
oatmeal in are serving instant oatmeal. Meaning that it's ground finer than the old fashion type of
oatmeal which is not as finely ground as the instants are.

When you eat oatmeal at home, do you have the same type of problem?

Oatmeal is a pretty carby food item for a lot of diabetics. Roughly 30 grams per 1/2 cup of cooked
oatmeal, for the old fashion, and upwards of 45 grams per 1/2 cup for some of the instant oatmeals,
depending of course if it's flavored and or sweetened or not.

or D. pick something other than oatmeal when eating out.

And I know personally I eat at least two or more cups of oatmeal when I have it, which is
pretty much every morning, but my level of exercise allows me to do that much. Also not too
    sure who eats only
1/2 a cup of it. Toddlers maybe? ;-)

    type 2, dumped the metformin
    D&E for now...

  8. I find I get into trouble if I only eat carbs at a meal. My breakfast includes half a grapefruit,
a bowl of oat flakes (unsweetened health-food store type) with 15 g of fruit (banana, apple,
    berries, peach)

but I make sure I have some cheese or peanut/almond butter as well. If you only have carbs your
sugar will go up and then down, but some protein will keep you level until the next meal.

  9. I was fixing myself small (less than a cup cooked) portions of oatmeal with Equal, cream and
blueberries. Recently that has been sending my sugar count sky high. Went back to eggs for breakfast
    - darn it. Nan, Type 2

I thought the metformin was helping so much that I'd try a bowl of oatmeal while I was watching
a movie in the evening last week. At one hour I was at 108, but at two hours I was at 158.
    Ooops! *sigh*

    G'day ladies.

Eggs have had a bad press; but I try to use free-range nowadays. Try your oatmeal or cereal closer
to bed-time, works for me and has other side-benefits in the morning :-)

Also try things like mushrooms, smoked fish, grilled tomato with a slice of bacon, sausages, re-
    heated casseroles, etc for brekky.

    Apologies Priscilla.

It was one of those posts where I was trying to reply to two people at once; my mistake. It was Nan
    who had it for breakfast.

I'll keep things seperate in future, sorry about the confusion.

    Cheers, Alan, T2, Oz.

I was excessively snippy about it, I'm afraid. Apologies of my own!
