Hi, I've been an RN for about 14 years now and want to finish my BS degree. (I have a AA degree in Nursing now). I have the burning desire now to go to Medical school. I currently practice as a Hospice RN. I have volunteered for Boy Scouts for about 8 years, I have gone to a camp for Hospice Kids as a volunteer for the past 2 years, I have practiced in infusion therapy and trauma nursing. My only worry is my age, 39. I can become a Doctor if I can get into med school. My plan is a 3 year residency in family medicine then off to practice in a rural area. I don't much care about where. I don't care where I go to school either. I have a burning desire to do this and spend 25 years practicing. My wife is 101% behind me.

this may seem semantic ... but i am always concerned when i hear someone express a desire to go to graduate school... versus a desire to actually practice a profession. why did you phrase it as a burning desire to go to medical school versus a burning desire to become a family physician? what is it specifically about practicing family medicine that will drive you to pursue this career? as far as specifics go, you will need to definitely complete your B.S. degree first -- but you should consider pursuing a B.S. with a major in something other than nursing. You'll need to take prerequisites -- hopefully the college/university that you will attend has a premed advisor to assist you. Your age is not a factor -- but you will need to demonstrate that you can handle a tough courseload to overcome any perception that you're a possible academic "risk" -- i.e., that you are at risk of failing the med school courseload -- and that starts with selling yourself as wanting to become a DOCTOR .. not a medical student.
