6. IT'S ROBERTSON, SEEAR FOR GREECE: Australia's Olympic triathlon team is complete. Rather, this
is the "Olympic Nomination Triathlon Team," as the six selections must be formally accepted by
the Australian Olympic Committee before advancing to Athens. Triathlon Australia posted this
announcement on its website (triathlon.org.autriathlon.org.auOpen ↗) Wednesday:
Maxine Seear has been the find of the 2003-2004 Accenture Series - finishing second to Loretta
Harrop in the first selection race in Coffs Harbour before blitzing the field in the second
selection race in Perth on Sunday.
The 2003 World Junior silver medallist joins fellow Queenslanders 34-year-old mum Rina Hill and
Sydney Olympian Harrop in a very exciting women's team.
As a member of the Olympic Shadow team, Hill's second placing was good enough for her to win an
automatic place on the team.
Robertson, 27, although disappointing in the selection races, has a proven record when it comes to
major international races. He added his second world title in Queenstown last November and he joins
Simon Thompson (ACT) and Greg Bennett (NSW) in a very strong men's trio.
Thompson, the 24-year-old who took out a loan to race in Europe last year, has won both selection
races, while the 31-year-old Bennett realized a lifelong Olympic dream when he finished second in
Perth to claim his berth from the Olympic Shadow Team.
The Triathlon Australian Elite Selection Committee spent most of Tuesday behind closed doors in
Sydney before submitting the team to the Triathlon Australia Board of Directors for ratification.
They had to decide on the third discretionary positions to add to the automatic selections and
the Nomination Team, with reserves to be submitted to the Australian Olympic Committee before
July 7th is:
WOMEN - Loretta Harrop (QLD), Rina Hill (QLD), Maxine Seear (QLD).
1st reserve: Michellie Jones (NSW); 2nd Reserve: Emma Snowsill (QLD).
MEN - Simon Thompson (ACT), Greg Bennett (NSW), Peter Robertson (WA). 1st reserve: Brad Kahlefeldt
(NSW); 2nd reserve: Courtney Atkinson (QLD).
Triathlon Australia chief executive David Burt said today, 'The selection of this team was without
doubt the toughest the Elite Selection Panel has ever had but in the end probably the most exciting
team. They have chosen the six athletes they believe can give Australia its best chance at winning
gold in Athens.
"'In Maxine they believe they have witnessed the arrival of a young talent which doesn't come around
very often and her performance on Sunday was absolutely outstanding.
'While the women's discretionary selection was tough, so was the men's but they believe Peter
Robertson's track record was enough to earn him the third discretionary position."

7. WHERE'S STEVE LOCKE? News of Steve Locke's resignation as executive director of USA Triathlon
came suddenly last month, largely over differences with USAT's newly elected board of directors
-- and how election guidelines were stretched. Not surprisingly, he has not gone far from
Colorado Springs, home of the US Olympic Committee headquarters and so many Olympic sports
(including triathlon).
He has found some work as the head of a five-person panel designated by the USOC to oversee the
reorganization of the U.S. Taekwondo Union. According to the Associated Press: "USTU came under
scrutiny last year when a USOC investigation found managerial and financial irregularities. The
organization faced losing its status as the sport's governing body in the United States, but the
USOC backed off last week after president Sang Lee and treasurer Ki Hong Kim resigned."
Locke "will head the governance and management committee, which include taekwondo athlete Juan
Miguel Moreno, two USOC board members and a USOC staff member. ... The USOC has already taken over
USTU's offices and started looking at its finances."

8. BARCELLOS TO LEAD BRAZIL: According to (webrun.com.brwebrun.com.brOpen ↗), the Brazilian endurance-news
website, Armando Barcellos will be the chief of Brazil's Olympic triathlon delegation in Athens.
A 2000 Olympian for Brazil and Pan American Games veteran, Barcellos was also the national champion
in both 1998 and 1999. His selection was announced Tuesday by the Confederação Brasileira de
Triathlon (CBTri).

9. ALSO IN AUSTRALIA: Most of Australia was pointing to Perth the following week, where Olympic
spots would be decided last Sunday. But on 25 January at Canberra, the fourth race in the
national Acenture Triathlon Series, this one for age-groupers, took place. Winners were Stuart
Bardsley and
