For what it is worth... the same (A Melon) idiot has been flooding another newsgroup I read daily
(rec.music.opera) where they have had other virulent troll problems for months.
So this is not just a local newsgroup issue. It seems to be bigger in scope than that.

I keep forgetting about this Melon person until y'all keep mentioning it. ;-) I used my kill filters
on MT newswatcher last night and have not seen a single post from it since...
Whyncha all do the same? It was easy.
I saw my filter say that there were 350 messages killed this morning. Did that ass actually post
that many???
If it is that desparate to have it's stories read, it needs to
Ob: food, on picking a ripe cantaloupe. I've gotten really good at it. I choose by three things.
Smell, color and if the melon is every so slightly soft and gives just a bit with a squeeze, smells
strongly of cantaloupe, and has begun to turn slightly yellow. I get the yellowest ones I can find.
They are perfect every time now, and my chickens Love the skins.

A.Melon is an anonymous remailer service, not a person. Killfile that "person" and you get rid of
that whole service, no matter who uses it.

Same here. Message filter are extremely useful.

I counted at least 200 before I filtered them out.

A.Melon is an anonymous remailer service. Many details about the messages' origin are masked,
however, I do know this spam attack was done by feeding that [censored] into a script that submitted it
to the remailer service over and over again.
Anyway, blocking that sender blocks *everyone* who uses that service. Not a bad idea.

I think so I got so tired I just blocked the sender.
I guess he's too stupid to know about blocking senders.

Actually there were 657.

Care to explain what an anonymous remailer service is and how it works to someone who does not know?
If it is what it sounds like, I am surprised that a company selling that sort of trouble is
allowed to exist. OTOH - nothing on the internet is really surprising anymore, but I would love to
know how it works.

Yeah. Get a real browser. ;-)
Sorry, could not resist... I only used google for a short time when my own server lost it's
newsfeed. The broadband on Grandecom works much better than Century every _dreamed_ of doing.
Seriously, I don't think it's possible to block on Google! Remember, they are an ARCHIVE! So
everything is going to be there... Might be a sorting option, like, search by author but that is
going to be a pain...
Or sort by date then catch up. My browser showed zero kills this morning, so melon may have left the
building. Or one can hope!

Let's hope he stays that ignorant. :-)
I was a bit taken aback when I first signed in last night and saw over 400 new messages! I set my
filters when I saw the reason, and the number immediately dropped back to the usual 150 or so. <G>
Thanks for reminding me of my filters last night. I seldom use them so tend to forget about
doing that. <G>

Yeah, but that A-hole still sees these type of posts so it knows that it's getting to people...
Quoted message said:Care to explain what an anonymous remailer service is and how it works to someone who does

Whenever you send email or post to usenet, your upstream provider sets headers that most people
never see or look at. These headers can trace your IP address, hostname, etc. The only way to change
these, since they are set outside of your control, is to go with a different provider.
An anonymous remailer allows a person to use a web site (usually) to type a message and send it. The
message appears to come from a different host, and with that layer of abstraction, there usually is
not a way to trace it to the "real" user. Sometimes the remailer will keep records, but not usually.
Have you ever filled out an online feedback form that mails something off to a company? That is a
form of anonymous remailer, although it is severely restricted and limited in who receives the
messages. But it has the same spam issues as ones like A.Melon -- anyone can pump massive quantities
of [censored] to a recipient with no accountability.

Selling? Bah, usually they're free, and located in countries that don't respect spam or other
abuse laws.

I doubt it. He probably doesn't read here, he's just spamming random newsgroups to [censored] people off.

Thanks for a great explanation - I now understand how it is done. Silly me to believe one would have
to pay for the 'privilege' ? <g>
