  1. finally after a number of years I'm ready to build my first wheel. Ultegra 6500 freehub, Ma3 rim, DT
14 gauge, spokes, 3x. What size spokes? For freehub

according to Damon Rinard spocalc 293.4, 292.3 according to DT website 294.7, 293.2 according to
    nashbar tech 297, 296

I believe I plugged in all the right info. Is there any way of knowing the correct size?

    Thanks, Joe

Obviously, either two or all three of those sources are wrong.

You would have a lot more confidence in your numbers if you calculate them yourself, using the
Pythagorean formula. It's just high-school math.

  3. Joe,

It's a good idea to measure the ERD yourself as it can vary even on the same make of rim.

I suspect Nashbar was thinking about 32 hole wheels and you are building a 36 spoke wheel. This will
matter of course. That plus a 1mm ERD difference would explain Nashbar's numbers verses Spocalc's.
The three different sources may well be using 3 different ERDs. ERD has a much bigger effect on
spoke length than either of the hub measurements, and it is prone to variation. Measure it yourself
as Damon describes, carefully. It's a good habit to do this. Then use the Spocalc number, making
sure the spoke count is correct. Round the decimals off, erring on the short side if in doubt.

I'd go 293, 292 if you know the ERD in Spocalc matches your rim.

IF you entered valid inputs, I'd use the Rinard spocalc, it's been accurate for me. It does the
"high school math" that Mr. Bennett comments on, and does it well. [Not sure if I could get my
college freshmen to dependably derive these solutions from scratch, though].

IIRC, DT measures their spokes in an unusual way, so it could be essentially agreeing with Rinard,
and anyway +/- 1mm won't really matter. Don't take my word for this, though, I'm not certain.

Sorry to say, but Nashbar comes out distant third in the credibility department on this issue.

As a final comment, if you're going to be too long or too short about 1mm, I tend to prefer too
long. With a double-wall rim like the Ma3, you will still keep the spoke ends far from the
    inner tube.

The reason I like this: I can thread the nipples onto the spokes to a consistent point, say, the
bottom of the nipple slot, before I reach very much tension. This starts me out with spokes of
fairly even tension and saves a lot of correction later. (Got my handy Bicycle Research speed tool
    for spinning the nipples on).

    Best of luck,

    Mark Janeba

Most errors are in rim ERD. Measure yours, then use any calculator.

  6. the e.r.d. given by mavic for the ma3 is 605mm, although there seems to be some variation
    in practice.

    that'll give 294 drive side, 295 non-drive.

i have a wheel built with those length spokes on a 105 hub [same dimensions as the ultegra] and
    it's perfect.

If I was going to spend my valuable time building a wheel, I would not use straight gauge spokes. I
    would use double butted.

    ERD 607, 45/32.5 x 45/20.5 2.6 mm holes = 296L x 295R Ulegra 6500

for 6400 it seems that spokes 1 mm longer could be calculated.
