Does anyone have any knowledge of a path on the top of Bamford Edge?
No right of way is shown there on the Dark Peak Map, and it does not appear to be access land.

To the best of my knowledge there is no path and the landowner does not allow access......
which is a pity

I have walked up there many times and have never had any problems. There is a path but it does not
exit at the Northern end. You are better crossing Bamford Moor (when either dry or frozen) and
making your way to Nab End on Stanage.

I remember doing exactly that when I first moved to Sheffield. After a quick drive around the moors
I parked up on the A57 and struck off across the moor ignoring any paths wondering what I would find
(no map ofcourse). I can remember sunbathing on the rocks overlooking Ladybower reservoir and then
wandering off to stumble upon Stanage Edge. Having grown up in a world of trees that must have been
my first experience of the wide open spaces...ah...memories.

Well climbing is allowed there by prior permission from the gamekeeper only, and then only usually
between October and April. I'd assume that similar conditions would apply for walking, but wouldn't
be surprised if walkers were discouraged completely (climbers are at least confined to one area and
one approach). Details of phone numbers etc are on the BMC web site at

I don't know how the CRoW act will change the situation, my guess would be that access will become a
lot easier.

As I said, I have never had a problem. I have even walked accross the moor when they've been
burning off the heather and have never been challenged. Perhaps they were hoping that I would
perish in the flames!

It isn't hard to get permission between October and April - but not for large groups, which are
discouraged. I've never heard of it being denied. It is rare but not unknown for permission to be
given in the summer.
So either the people who took the photos got permission (unlikely for a group of 25 in July I'd have
said). Or they went without permission. Which some people would say is fine, exercising moral
rights, etc etc. Others would say that it's jeopardising good relations with the landowners built up
over many years.

Are there signs up saying "access only by phoning this number". As I said above I wandered around
there a few times (this was about 15 years ago though) and thought I might revisit. I can't remember
seeing any kind of signs or fences and the idea that any kind of land was out of bounds wouldn't
have entered my head at that time even if it was fenced.

I came across this at the same time, it mentions a mass trespass but there is no date.

They dont know you are not climbing.. you just backed off your route
:-)
My wife got briefed for range west once. She will never climb, but got to accompany me on a climbing
trip and therefore was able to freely walk the Pembrokeshire coast path.
There is a marilyn in Wales. Go as a fisherman, and you get to drive up. Go as a walker, and its
sitka and goml dodging for you.. Gomls on the road and sitka on the footpaths. Often impersonating
another sport gets you round a problem.

Would you care to mention which one, and I'll make sure I pack the fishing rods when its turn
arrives...
Thanks for all the information folks, having been directed to a climbing site that gave the name and
number of the moor keeper, permission has been given to walk there, together with useful advice.

Because ther is little evidence of problems with small groups of walkers, and climbing seems to be
hassle free - other than a tradition of cooperating with the gamey.
A real Goml, worthy of high gomeldom and a credit to the black art, would be a damned sight better
at keeping us out...
I agree that the situation is not entirely satisfactory though.. Just that there are worse cases and
dont write off the edge as forbidden ground.

Tight Lines! The road to Coch-hwyiad passes a few metres from the trig. If you walk it, dont try and
bushwhack to a forest road to the NW like I did - grrrrr!
