  1. Last Friday's ramble was a 31.1 km around a circular route in the West Ilsley area that included a
chunk of the Ridgeway between Segsbury Castle and the A34.

Hard going, most of it, soft, wet, muddy and snow underfoot, slipping and sliding all over the
place. So, the question is, 31.1 km over this sort of ground is equivalent to walking how far over
    firm ground?

Don't say 31.1 km, BTW, you *know* what I mean <g>.

    Regards, Nick.

Quite a lot more probably in terms of energy use. My running pace on tarmac is about 10% faster than
on a similarly flat offroad surface which is very firm let alone soft mud.

I spent a week in Church Stretton once. Walking 10 or so miles of Wenlock Edge was more of a time
problem than 20 miles of Longmynd or 20 miles of Stiperstones. (I thought that Wenlock Edge, being
limestone, would be easy walking, but I found that in reality it was covered in a horrible
    glutinous mud.)

OTOH, I wasn't slowed down too much by 18 inches of snow on the Crossfell range.

More recently, the time taken to walk two towns over was increased from 90 minutes to 2 hours by the
    icy pavements, etc.
