I have an Ultegra double set I bought last year. I can trim up twice I believe before making the small to large transition. However, I can't trim down. If I shift down, it drops it through to the smallest chainring immediately rather than clicking down. So basically I have 4 clicks up and only 1 click down.
How do people deal with this problem? If you are on the highest gear and want to shift down a few it seems you can't. You need to shift down a lot then back up again?
Is the 2004 Ultegra shifters capable of trimming up and down?
I assume the triple shifters have an extra click on the way down?

Sounds like your front derailleur gear cable may be too tight. Proper adjustment of the front cable has nothing to do with eliminating slack from the cable when it's in the small chainring. Try loosening up the cable a small amount and see if you suddenly get that secondary position on the large chainring.

Leave the cable a wee bit loose, with a bit of slack when in the small ring and you will have the 'trim' feature.

Others have given you proper adjustment answers. If all that fails, here's the trick to trimming: Stop pedalling. Shift down, then trim up. Resume pedalling with derailer newly trimmed but on same ring.

AFAIK, there is only one shifter for both double and triple; the derailer is what changes. I think you lose the ability to trim with the triple. -- Rick Onanian
