  1. Where to start?

I'm male, 36 yrs old, 6ft tall, and weigh approx 270 lbs.

I need to lose at least 50 lbs. I'd be very happy at 215 lbs.

My problem right now is not knowing where to start.

Where do I start? How do I go about making the changes I need to lose the weight?

    How have you done it?

I'd really appreciate some help with this.

  2. Welcome aboard!

I think the easiest way to start WW is to attend the meetings. This will give you the program and
reference materials to get you started. The "getting started" pamhlet they give out for week 1 will
explain the program basics for you. Also you will need to increase your water to 6-8 glasses a day,
make sure you are eating 5-6 servings of fruits and veggies. Start writing down everything that you
eat including the portion sizes. This will help you understand what you can start cutting back on to
make the transition to the WW wol smoother.

You can also check out the weightwatcher.com website for more ideas. They have an online program too
that you might find suits you.

    Good luck.

  3. I think Laura pretty much covered one of the better options - I started going to meetings at the
urgings (over a year of them) of a friend. I learned portion control and also how much junk I was
consuming. I already ate some good stuff but too much of some things and too much snacking on fatty
    or fattening things.

If you can stick with the WW program, it definitely works. Oh, yes, getting some exercise or more
    will definitely help.

About 18 months ago I decided I'd had enough. After little help from the doctor and not believing in
any of the commercial diets I did my own thing and started reading here. Over the last year I've
learned loads, and I'm convinced that WW is one of the best ways to go.

To lose weight you have to reduce calories in such a way that you can keep them reduced for the rest
of your life. You don't have to use WW but it's a good method and it works for many people. Use
    whatever works best for you.

I started by cutting out all the junk food (burgers, fried chicken, shakes, sausage rolls, prepared
meals etc). I also started cooking everything from fresh. I've always eaten loads of veg so that
wasn't a problem. I also cut down on portions. Together these got me started. Then I got an account
at fitday.com and I was able to get my calorie intake properly under control.

Getting more exercise is also a great idea. Not only will it help egt the weight down, it'll also
    get you fitter.

You are actually close to where I started (273) and I'm now under your target (I'm 210) so what you
want to achieve is definately doable

    Good luck

I'm convinced that WW is the way to go. My girlfriend started WW and I was on the verge of trying
out South Beach. After I read some WW success stories on their online community board (for online
subscribers) I decided to give it a try. Besides, it's easier to eat the same thing as my girlfriend
does instead of preparing something completely different. My first week was the worst. Especially
the weekend. I had a hard time with the points and trying to find something to eat. Everything in my
house was high-pont food and we had no ingredeints to make the healthy foods. A lot of initial
shopping was done but not without the frustration of getting used to the smaller portions. That's
when I learned about point-free veggies!!!

I'd highly reccomend staying away from those low-carb diets. Your body required carbs. To deprive it
of carbs is very unhealthy. For more information about these types of diets read
    weightwatchers.comindex art.aspx. I did some further
research about low-carb diets to make sure that this isn't just a biased article based on
competition and most experts agree with the information provided.

I'm a WW Online customer. I don't have the guts to step into a meeting so the online system is
perfect for me. It's loaded with recipies, restarant guides and gives points values for almost every
food. It also has a points calculator (based on calories, fat, and fiber) for foods that aren't on
the list. It even tells you how many _bonus_ points (extra consumable points) you've earned based on
your activities for the day. You can either consume those points or leave them alone for faster
weight loss. I started playing racquetball about two weeks before starting WW. To my pleasure I
found out that this extremely fun sport gives me an extra 5 points per half-hour of play!!! It's
    also a great workout.

I think they still offer one week free trial. I'd highly advise that you give it a shot and see how
you like it. If you don't like it you can cancel at no charge (if the offer is still there).

  6. welcome to this great group. 1 Decide you are losing for you and you alone, the reasons you want to
lose must be based in your needs and no one else's Write them down to reference later.
    2. Commit to making small, reasonable changes that you can live with forever, this way you will be
creating a new way of life and way of eating and you won't be dieting. The first change I made
was committing to writing it all down, no matter if I was over or not. The second thing I
committed to was getting enough water. I also have not committed to things that I am not sure I
can keep up forever. this has probably made me lose slower but I am confident that the weight I
have lost will stay gone as when I get to goal there will not be anything I "quit" doing.
    3. really look at your portions/types/food combinations/ and patterns of eating. This is important
as it will show you where you might want to change things. There is nothing wrong with eating a
serving of cookies for dessert, but know what a realistic serving is and don't have more than
that. There may be things you can't/won't want to give up. This for me is my bedtime snack. I
still eat it, most of the time and I am still losing. 4 for me attending the WW meetings is very
important. Others here do it on their own or on line, find out which works for you and go with
it. 5 post here often, we are all great people and we want you to be as healthy as you can.

    4. Never give up. You only fail if you give up. If you eat too many points well you just did and
that is that. Try and figure out what happened and why, learn and move on.

I am sorry I went on so long but I hope it helps you, again welcome, Lee iplom® <[email hidden]>

  7. Hmmmmmmm, tough questions there. <g> I think you've made a first step by acknowledging the need to
lose some weight and looking for some avenues to accomplish that task. Now where to go? For me, I
just jumped right in, stumbled around a bit but never looked back. This new way of life is a
learning experience, which seems to be never ending even when our goals are met ... we then have to
learn how to stay at those goals.

There are a few different ways you can start. You can do like some of us and just jump in and get
going, work things out as you go. Others have taken a week or two to just journal EVERYTHING they
eat and drink, then look it over very well and start making those changes ... substituting lower fat
items for higher fat ones, fruit and veggies for potato chips and munchies, using more veggies at
mealtime as a filler, smaller portions, etc.

The first changes I made were switching to a lighter wheat bread (are several varieties readily
available now), lighter icecreams and cookies (skinny cows and meringue cookies were my saviour in
the early days), non fat or low fat items for full fat versions (margarine, sour cream, mayo, etc),
and eating more chicken and fish than higher fat cuts of beef. Another thing I told myself was that
I would not be afraid to try anything new. I learned I DID like fish, and found fruit to be my
    friend. <g>

Also, post and read here often. I know I could never have made it without the support and tips from
this group, as well as the gentle kick in the seat on occassion. This newsgroup is a wonderful tool
    that is always available.

Have you joined weightwatchers or are you just now thinking out your options as to which way to go?
Whatever you decide, good luck on your journey!
