  1. I am training for my first marathon (Bluenose on May 23) and I am wondering if I should be concerned
about recreational skating. The lakes are frozen and I like to take my kids for a little skate most
days. This is not "exercise" for me, just spinning around for fun and helping the boys out.

I'm probably just being paranoid, but is there anything I should be concerned about, like
    ankle trouble?

if your ankles are strong enough to skate, you should be fine. Might actually be good cross
training, since the motion is different for skating than for running.

I like to get out my hockey skates once in a while and go at it. As with skiing, knee injuries are
more likely than ankle injuries while ice skating, because you have these nice stiff high boots that
keep you from flexing the ankle much. You can really twist a knee, though, if you hang up a skate
blade on something frozen into the ice. Personally, I'd avoid skates with toe picks for lake
skating...That may be a male perspective, though.

  4. Get out there and enjoy! You won't do any harm. You'll probably do some
good. Running is pretty repetitious (!) and lots of little leg muslces don't
get much of a work-out; you can help that by skating, biking, rowing ... But
I bet you'll be stiff the next day!
