Sounds like an older model. Carbones haven't changed a whole lot in the last few years. A hub change, minor cosmetics and the red SSC logo. They were 16F/16R in 1998 and then 16F/20R in 1999. Basic wheel design is unchanged. You should be lucky to have the pretty polished hubs instead of bland black ones. I weigh 80kg and no problems with a 16 spoke rear wheel -but my rim is aluminum.

I haven't ridden the Carbones, but I know my AL rim Cosmics are pretty stinkin' tough wheels even
with 16 spokes. I like the silver hub/spokes I have. I'm between 175-180# depending on whether you
catch me at the begining of racing season or the end...

As a note: Carbones aren't all that light no matter if you got this year's model or the first
year's model.

I weigh 210 pounds and shredded the same rear wheel you are talking about. I pulled four spokes
right through the rim. Mavic offered to rebuild the wheel with a new rim for the "reasonable" cost
of $350.00, this was four years ago, and I had only paid $500.00 for the set. Sorry to say my
experience was less than favorable. Chris

I have a 16-spoke rear hub from a friend's crash on the Carbones. Same deal from Mavic: getting just
the rim from them is exorbitant!
