We've had overcast and rainy conditions all week and the forcast last night and this morning was
overcast and rain in the afternoon with a maimum temp of 24C great for that long hill walk I've
been promising my misus and her sprog. We set of early and lost our way ariving late to begin
walking, plan (a) was a 10 km walk over the mountains, to you chaps they maybe hills, here there
called mountains and to me the're bl**dy high. Plan (b) is a walk around the mountains 17 km. I'm
carring all the water and everthing goes as planned for the first two hours a lovely hike.But 4
litres of water gets heavy at my age so at the first stop no one is really thirsty so I decide to
dump 2 litres.We had just started off again and the clouds part and the temperature literally
rocketed to 37 C when we got to the fork I look up at the mountain and know that there is no way in
hell at that temperature I'm going to make the top. So it was a further 10kms of hiking in that
temp no trees no shade just grass, rocks and a stoney track. We might have walked around the
mountain but even climbing a couple of hundred feet in the foothills had me gasping for breath and
the heat literally sucks the stength out of you. I definately thought I was heart attack material.
we made it back after 3 hours hiking in that heat and sat in the shade of some trees. The temp in
the shade was a comfortable 34 C, the 17kms had taken 5 hours of which 3 were pure torture. After
the walk I decided 3 things
1. I'm not a hill walker flat and level for me.
2. Never trust the forcast.
3. Get a hiking pole my knees are definately not up to it any more Hiking in the UK has its

I'm guessing but are we talking about Zambia? It sounds like a nice big umbrella would be a useful

Funny enough I used to live in Zambia in Kitwe, a lovely country and an Irish friend and my self
used to go out into the bush for a long weekend every month. I was actually refering to SA the
Bokmakierie trail in the Suikerbos nature reserve. Thats why the temperature yesterday caught us
somewhat by surprise. Today has started the same, so its a 7km walk in the late afternoon.

Always room for someone from the old country. My missus has never seen snow, drove 800 kms one
Sunday last year when we heard the pass in the Drakensburg was blocked by 4' of snow. When we got
there 12 hours later it had all melted, I wasn't about to climb up a mountain so she could get a
