In November 2002, I wound up a multi-stage, solo, unsupported ride from Vancouver, Canada to
Sonoita, Mexico, travelling from volcano to volcano through Washington, Oregon, California, Arizona
and northern Mexico.
In February I hope to resume this trip for about six weeks, heading toward el volcan Popocatepetl,
near Mexico City.
My tentative plan is to head east on Highway 2, then down the coastal route on Highway 15, seeking
whatever less travelled backroads are available.
My goal is not to get anywhere rapidly, but to have a great time cycling, experiencing Mexico and
visiting whatever volcanoes are possible.
My question is, is Highway 15 too risky?
If so:
should I follow Highway 2 east, perhaps to Aguas Prietas and head south?
should I backtrack and take the Baja?
should I head down to Hermosillo on Highway 2, then east into the mountains on Highway 16?
or, has anyone got any better suggestions?
I had a great time getting to Sonoita, except for getting blown off the road, in a too close for
comfort incident in November 2002 with a semi-trailer in the Sonora Desert, that left my bike banged
up, my body bruised and my spirit somewhat battered.
This is my first post, so I apologize if I have gone on too long.
