  1. Does anyone know if there is a list of velodromes in Melbourne on the net somewhere, and what is the
story with using them. I used to swim at Reservoir pool next to the velodrome and would sometimes
chuck my bike over the fence and do a session after a swimming, but I was never sure what the story
was with public use. And I noticed another velodrome while cycling along the South Eastern freeway
trail that seemed to have a few people taking a quick detour off the trail.

The Hawthorn velodrome (next to the bike path) isn't really a velodrome, but it's used by the public as a training track. Most of the other velodromes are owned by the clubs used most nights for club racing and training during summer, which means you won't be allowed on unless you are a club member and have a track bike.

If you have a question about a specific track, email the club or check when their training/racing times are.

If you mean the one near the hockey pitches, between Glenferrie and Auburn Roads, it's open for use
by anyone. There used to be a board next to the bike path with some safety rules, but that's
disappeared. There's another one near the other entrance.

Unfortunately that circuit next to SE is not a velodrome, rather a bike path in a circle !

I do know the the Carnegie velodrome is a council owned venue and can be used by the public anytime,
except when booked by the local clubs.

Well I guess the bike path in a circle comment could probably apply to the Reservoir one as well,
although I see from the velodromes link that it is used by Preston Cycling Club. Does anyone know of
any other bike paths in a circle. I just want somewhere that I can roll up to at irregular hours,
ie. not based around scheduled club times, and do some quality training without dodging kids and
dogs (which is what I spend a lot of time doing on the cycle tracks around Melbourne). Dave B.

Unless you want to ride at night or early morning, I think you'd be hard pressed to find anything
that wasn't overrun by kids or in use by a cycling club. Unless you specifically like going around
in circles (track IS cool though!), I'd suggest finding a quiet piece of road making up a loop of
your desired distance or an out-and-back course.

Does this mean you've actually got out on your track bike?
Hope to see you at Australia Day Madison.

Yeah! I've been going to the Blackburn Thu night novice training sessions for the last 4 or so weeks
(none over xmas/nye). I'll stick with these until someone says I should try Monday nights "harder"
sessions. My race license has expired anyway so I can't race until I renew it. I can't renew it
until I have some money. I wont have money until I return from Europe... sad, sad, sad!

I checked Blackburn's site (www.blackburncycling.org.au/) for some info on the Aus Day Madison, but
if you were thinking I'd be racing by then, nope, sorry 🙁. If I'm not doing anything else that
day, I might pop in for a look... I'll be the tired, scruffy, hungover dude carrying a big black
    camera :-)
