Took a short walk along the Right of Way towards Loch Tay from Newton Bridge in the Sma' Glen today,
did about six miles in 4 hours. I had a cousin with me who is a keen birdwatcher and who readily
identified the birds we saw. I must admit I would normally recognise a few basic species but with
the help of my expert visitor today we saw: Stonechats, female Hen Harrier, Green Sandpiper, Merlin,
Kestrel, Heron, Golden Eye duck, Mallard, Peregrine, Dippers and a genuine but far off sighting of a
Golden Eagle circling just above the slopes of Auchnafree Hill. We also saw two groups of deer well
up on the slopes and on the skyline. Late in the afternoon on the way back to Newton Bridge we were
treated to a weasel hunting in the snow for 3 or 4 minutes before it shot off into a crack in a
tree. This was a short stretch of the legs but certainly let me see some of the birds I probably
miss every time I am on the hill.
