Easy route up Blencathra via Scales Fell, Doddick Fell, then onto the summit of Blencathra.

Alternately and in my opinion a better route is to skirt Scales Fell to reach Scales Beck and just
before reaching Scales Tarn take the path on its south side rising up the fell side (which is not
show on the OS maps) to eventually reach Blencathra, this route gives an excellent view off Sharp
Edge . Both routes could be started from the Inn at Scales just off the A66 Grid Ref. 343269 or an
even better start point is about half a mile north east along the miner road leading from the Inn at
Grid Ref. 348272.

Hi

The trip was a baptism of fire for our rookie! We left the car at the small lay-by at Scales with an
accent by Scales fell having to take care as spindrift and high winds where a problem generally
visibility was good with wonderful views of the S.W. fells. Atkinson pike was our next port of call
then along to Blencathra summit unable to stand at times due to high winds and blizzard conditions.
there where some good cornices forming along the ridge towards Knowe Crags the decent was via Blease
Fell to Thirkeld.Our rookie is converted! thanks to everyone who offered advise.

Thanks Rob for letting use know how things went, reminded me of the initiation of a friend to fell
walking a few years ago.

He wanted to do Helvellyn so we set out from Glenridding on a wet day, first up to Lanty's Tarn and
then onto Hole-in-the-Wall for which point on there was a good covering of snow. Two of the group
weren't to keen on crossing Striding Edge in snow but the newbie to the fells was very keen to go on
if I thought it was ok, he was having a great time even after getting very wet coming up to this
point and despite the fact the other two where debating whether to go down to Red Tarn and wait for
use coming back down from Sweral Edge. I decided to go along to the star of Edge and see what the
snow condition where like and make a decision there. On reaching the Edge we all agreed that the
snow condition where not going to be a problem in crossing and getting to the summit of Helvellyn so
we all went onto the top. Just as we where about up to the top of the climb of the edge the snow
really got going and as we approached the summit it was a white out thus meaning the poor lad had no
views. Finding the start of the way down over Sweral Edge was quit difficult in the white out and I
had in fact passed it by a abut a hundred yards before realising we had walk to far, so had a couple
of other parties so we called them back and started down. The newbie and I had a great time coming
down Sweral Edge despite disappearing up to our wastes in snow at times, the cause of our amusement
was our other two companions seemingly inability to stay upright for more than a few minutes at a
time and the fact thy kept claming "we where all going to die" and it was all my fault as I had
introduced them both to fell walking years earlier. Needless to say all was well in the end as I
would have not attempted it if in any doubt about the conditions.

My self and the new guy went back to do Helvellyn on our next visit to the Lakes in much better
weather and this time came down over Nethermost Pike and High Crag and back along Grisdale with
great views on the round.
