In recent years most of my photography has been using weatherproof mju compact 35mm cameras, but I
recently got an Olympus mju 400 and was using it in the Lake District this Christmas break. It seems
to produce good images and has the advantage of being able to switch off the LCD screen and compose
the pictures with the optical viewfinder.
The mju 400 camera is slightly smaller than my 35mm mju zooms and I found it acceptable to use one
handed, but a little awkward when wearing thick fleece gloves. It is however a metal bodied camera,
so is slightly heavier than my 35mm mju models. I took about 100 shots over 4 days, in weather
conditions ranging from warm and heavy rain to cold yet sunny. I was pleased with the way it handled
the diverse lighting conditions.
The weather proofing is fine for use whilst walking, climbing or skiing, but I'm note sure I'd
chance it down a cave without some additional protection such as being carried in a fully waterproof
rugged plastic container. There is also an underwater housing that can be purchased for it.
