    *How* and *why* does it work? Assuming, of course, that it does...

    Fran I'm guessing the active ingredient is silica gel. That's the stuff that comes in little packets
    in packaging and that are inscribed *Do not eat*. One of my pals has 2 bags of it that he stuffs in

    Probably just a bag of silica gel isn't it? Which if you want a bag of silica gel could be got much
    cheaper elsewhere. Somebody told me you can get them from caravan dealers. And if you buy loose
    crystals you'll be able to see how "used" they are by the colour change. I'd have thought newspaper
    would have worked better for jobs like drying out wet boots.

    Silica gel. The only other things that would dry cannot be regenerated, or would contravene health
    and safety, and also be damn expensive.

    Note that silica gel is pretty good at taking up moisture and it's easy to overdry leather boots.
    Don't leave the boots in storage with this stuff.

    It does, *much* better, because it not only sucks moisture from the wet-boot internal air but also
    wicks by capillary attraction. The gel bags only absorb from the air, and they only do so rather
    slowly. Excellent for sealed boxes in which something such as the emergency mobile phone is to be
    kept at low humidity despite generally sogging surroundings, but not good for quickly drying
    something where quickly = overnight.

    I must admit I hadn't realised it could be recycled. I suppose I'd just thought that once it had
    absorbed all it could, that would be it.

    Having now read some other responses, and had time to think about it a bit, does the gel have to be
    in physical contact with the wet thing? What I mean is, if the gel is itself in a bag of some sort,
    then surely the bag has to absorb the wetness from whatever you want to get dry so that the gel can
    then dry the bag. It seems an awfully long-winded way of doing things, although I suppose if you're
    out in the wilds and get soaking wet... but no, that wouldn't work would it, because surely the
    drying process would take too long? You know what? I'm getting further and further from being
    convinced of the efficacy of this product. Even if it did come into its own in the wilds, presumably
    it would take on all the weight of the original wetitude until it could be dried out again...

    As an aside, has anyone seen any different colour self indicating gel to the blue/pink kind? They
    were supposed to be bringing out different colours due to recent possible carcinogenic fears
    regarding cobalt chloride in the blue/pink stuff.

    Well, it absorbs moisture from the air but I'd have thought it would have taken a long time to
    actually dry something out unless it was in physical contact with it and wicking the moisture up
    by capillary action. We've got quite a bit at work which is used for maintaining a dry
    atmosphere rather than drying things out. Must try it out in my socks next time I get soaked
    riding in on my bike.

    Silica gel works by dehumidifying the atmosphere. Once you get an humidity less than a certain
    amount (which is defined by the temperature) then water will start evaporating from any reservoirs
    into the air - it's then taken up by the gel.

    So to actually use this thing.

    1. Dry out the gel. Hot pipe is probably the best way.
    2. Remove as much moisture as possible from the wet item.
    3. Seal inside a water tight chamber such as a ziplock bag. You don't need to reduce the air inside
    but don't use a bage bigger than is needed.
    4. Increase temperature modestly. Place near a room heater etc.

    The gel effectively tugs water from the air, and the dry air tugs it from the thing to be dried.
    It's worth noting that some things may well tug back - natural fabrics such as cotton etc love
    to hold on to water due to hydrogen bonding and will take longer to dry, rayon and nylons will
    dry quickly.

    If you don't overload the system then it will work well, I used to use silica dessiccators at Uni to
    get exceedingly dry samples. However the capcity of silica gel for water is not as great as say
    cottons capacity for water, so I'm not sure just how much is going to be needed.

    All I have to add to what Andy and Chris have put is that I have only ever seen these things used in
    huts etc. back at base. I don't think I'd be inclined to drag them around the hills on multi day
    trips. I just pack a couple of pairs of dry socks. If wet feet on multi day trips is a problem to
    you I'd be thinking about ways to keep your boots / feet dry in the first place by proofing /
    gaiters. When fording up to my knees I have a pair of extra socks I take my boots off and have a
    pair of *fording socks*. Cheers Graham

    Yes. I have cochlear implants and the sound processors (VERY expensive electronics) come with natty
    waterproof cases that incorporate silica gel drying capsules. These have the new indicating colours
    but the change is between shades of dirty-yellow and I can never work out when they need replacing.

    The old type of drying system used an aluminium cartridge with a mica window and you just popped it
    into the oven for an hour when the colour changed (I seem to remember that dry was deep blue).

    That would be nice to have, especially if you can run it cold so it doesn't heat the boots at all
    if you have leather ones. The only problem is that it would be hard to run it on overnight
    camping trips :-(
