What if the balance metric on a power meter isnt telling us the whole story about our pedaling efficiency. We always hear that a perfectly balanced power output between the left and right legs is the holy grail, but what if thats not actually the case. Is it possible that the balance metric is oversimplifying the complexities of human biomechanics and pedaling dynamics.
Take for example, a rider who has a naturally stronger leg due to muscle imbalances or past injuries. Should they be striving for a perfectly balanced power output, or would that actually be detrimental to their overall performance. Maybe the balance metric should be viewed more as a guideline rather than a hard and fast rule.
Furthermore, how much variation in balance is actually acceptable before it starts to impact performance. Is a 48/52 split between legs acceptable, or is that too far outside the norm. And what about the impact of different types of terrain and riding styles on balance. Does a rider who spends most of their time climbing need to prioritize balance in the same way as a rider who does a lot of flat, high-cadence work.
Id love to hear from some of the experts out there who have actually studied this stuff. Is the balance metric really as simple as it seems, or are there more nuances to it that we should be considering.
