How about going for a walk on the hills that no-one else has done before and is not eroded to hell?

The lower classes of Mountain Marathons are generally suitable for walking. Part of the challenge is
you don't know exactly where you're going in advance, but it *will* be a challenge, and part of the
challenge will include navigation. Google the LAMM, KIMM and SLMM for more details, each is an
annual event and very well organised.

If it is still done, there is the annual TGO Challenge walk. I think it takes place in May and you
are walking from one side of Scotland to the other.

There is also the circular route out of Kirby Stephen taking in Wild Boar Fell and Mallerstang edge.

The LDWA might also be able to help.

You are right - the classic route does indeed start at the Isle of Skye. The route then crosses
Black Hill and Bleaklow to the Snake Inn, then to Edale and the Nag's Head, and then on to the Cat
    and Fiddle to finish.

    Quoted message said:

The first inn was the Isle Of Skye on the A635 Holmfirth/Greenfield road, a few miles south
    of Marsden.

(The inn no longer existed even then, though the road junction where it had stood was still known
locally as the Isle Of Skye.)

It still is - I think it closed in the early 1950s

The last inn was the Cat & Fiddle. I'm pretty sure one of the ones in the middle was Snake Inn. But
I can't remember the fourth inn, and I didn't know it had acquired a fifth.

A variant - you can start in Marsden at the (name escapes me) Inn/pub/hotel, and walk up to the Isle
of Skye past the Wessenden reservoirs.

Still is , but the 2004 entries have closed. Mind you can still walk across Scotland if you want,
and many do, outwith the Challenge.

According to Eric Byne the first extension to the Marsden Edale was the 3 Inns in 1922 - Cat and
Fiddle, Snake Inn and Isle of Skye. And "in modern times the route has been varied to include four,
five or even more inns, among them the George and Dragon at Woodhead, the Flouch near Hazlehead and
    the Nag's Head in Edale."

With regard to the OP there are literally hundreds of challenge walks these days even excluding
those that can only be walked as an organised event such as the Fellsman Hike. The most popular used
to be the Lyke Wake Walk which probably had more completions in a single day than the notionally
similar Derwent Watershed had in a full year.

    The Nags Head, Edale.

Was part of the George Keeling Trophy ("tyro trophy"😉 winning team in 1970

    dynarx.demon.co.uksummaryofwinners.html

(Should be Kyall VSU, not Kayall)

I think Russ is misremembering, as he calls it an extension of Marsden-Edale, but Marsden-Edale is
only three of the four Inns!
