I agree with this - my family have found our set very useful in all sorts of circumstances. The set
I've got aren't as powerful as the ones mentioned above - 2 miles is about the limit - but OTOH just
less than £100 for a set of 6 handsets from Argos, complete with chargers, seemed well worth it.

On a slightly different note... walking in the Lakes I often walk/talk to
people with the handheld CB's - anyone recommend a good cheap 2nd hand
dealer :

Or a decent supplier - must be light and last a reasonable time (5 hours)

Helps to know that the frequency band that you can use in the UK is 446 PMR and is license free, a
variety of different qualities are available as regards handsets, I have a set of two Icom's, going
for build quality and also the fact that my wife Jackie does not want to take her amateur radio
exam, but basically they nearly all do the same thing.

Eight channels and 40 sub frequencies, remember you can be overheard this is not private.

Although it says they will only transmit over 3 miles it is quite possible to go further and tests
and experimentation has proved otherwise, there is even a web site devoted to it.

The downside is that "some" people buy the really cheap ones and spend all thier time blowing down
the microphone or making funny noises!!

Cheaper then using a mobile phone if you are out and about though and only a short distence
between you.

The ones you get here are legal to use in the UK. The American system uses a different frequency.

The high power ones they sell in the US use a different frequency band than the ones you can buy for
use in Europe and you need a license to transmit in that band in the UK. You can't use our radios
over there either even though you can use them in Europe with no problems.

Wireless telegraphy act makes it an offence to use transmitters outside the specified range and over
specified power.

Using them near Sellafield in the lakes for example could actually provoke a response - they like to
listen in on people and if you are outside the specified freqencies you might find some humourless
coppers coming looking for you.

Time to use one from , say Haycock on a foul day.. They will enjoy looking. Should be busy arresting
the folk who squanderd all that money of ours on the reprocessing plant they are about to close.
