But heck, I'm feeling nice today. You're at a college near Glasgow, right?

Take the train to Old Kilpatrick station. Take a 1:50000 Ordnance Survey map with you and go for a
wander up the farm road into the Old Kipatricks hills. Visit the reservoirs, and maybe get up as far
as a hill called Duncolm. Take a mate with you in case you get into trouble.

Take your bike, or get a lift with somebody and go to the Queens View car park on the Stockiemuir
Road. Walk up to a place called the Whangie. If its snowing bring a bin bag.

Go up to Carbeth - I was surprised to learn about 'the big fire' of the 1930's, where unemployed
people and people from Glasgow factories and shipyards would gather. Believe it or believe it not,
training courses for people going off to fight in the Spanish Civil War were held at Carbeth.

Visit these places and you will be following in the footsteps of many Scottish walkers and climbers.
And you might learn something about your history.

If you're really serious about this sort of stuff, does your college organise weekends away at
outdoor centres? Or does it have a walking club?

Right on your doorstep your have Ben Lomond - but you'll need to go along with some experienced
people for your first forays out into the bigger hills.

ps. for the first person who cries 'safety' you're right. But generations of teenagers have been
going up to the Old Kilpatrick hills.

Is there still a ferocious goml at large on one of the routes to Duncolm? Used to feature a
bit in TAC

I remember the track up to Greenside reservoir being highlighted as an access black-spot in TAC, but
I've never had any bother on the 3 or 4 occasions I've used that particular route. Last time was
about 2 years ago; there was definately some building work going on near the bottom, maybe that was
the problem.

There used to be a nasty character at Wester Cochno AFAIR but a few years back he was pulled in on a
firearms offence. He tried to scare off some 'ramblers' he thought were going to fish one of the
reservoirs. He has been quiet ever since though I think he only got a warning and lost his shotgun
certificate. I heard plenty of stories of large dogs on the loose near Cochno but was scared off
going that way myself. He gets a mention in TACs 19 and 21 but you will probably need to search
newspaper archives for the gun incident.
