So here we are, another thread about optimizing our ride for the sake of our joints, with some of you extolling the virtues of longer or shorter cranks. Ive seen claims about the benefits of 167.5mm cranks, but Im still not convinced. Do 167.5mm cranks really help improve joint mobility, or is this just another myth perpetuated by manufacturers and gullible cyclists?
Think about it, most of us have spent years honing our riding style, and suddenly, were supposed to believe that a tiny adjustment in crank length is going to magically fix all our joint issues? I highly doubt it. Your knees, hips, and ankles are all still going to be subject to the same forces and stresses, regardless of crank length. And what about the poor souls whove invested in custom-fit bikes, only to discover that their joints still ache after a long ride? Did they just waste their money?
So, Ill ask again: whats the scientific evidence that 167.5mm cranks actually improve joint mobility? Is it just a case of selectivity bias, where people who switch to shorter cranks happen to be those who were already experiencing joint issues, and then they attribute their improvement to the crank length rather than some other factor? Or perhaps its just a placebo effect – they think the shorter cranks are going to help, so they do?
Lets not forget, there are plenty of other factors that affect joint mobility, like saddle height, handlebar position, and pedaling style. So, are we really sure that crank length is the magic bullet here? And what about the added complexity and cost of switching to a non-standard crank length? Is it really worth it, or are we just succumbing to the sunk cost fallacy?
Im not buying the hype, folks. Convince me otherwise. Show me the hard evidence that 167.5mm cranks are the answer to all our joint mobility prayers.
