See if you can find a copy of the AA guide to walks in Shropshire in your local library. I copied a
few walks around Ironbridge in preparation for a trip up there in November and I know it had walks
around the Wrekin area.

Hi Roger , I've done the Wrekin a couple of times in the past and as far as I can remember this is
the route I took which is probably the easiest .

Turn off at jnc 7 of the M54 and follow the road south for approximatly 1 mile until you reach a
left hand road junction where there is space either side of the road to park up . Opposite the
road junction there is a footpath to the right which leads all the way to the summit .

BTW are you going for the Wainwright outlying fells too? I've done books 1 - 7 but only about half
of book '8'.

No chance. The Wrekin is my last Marilyn in section 38A (Shropshire). I did the 6 Shropshire Summits
back in the mid 70s.

Best route is the Southwest ridge, quite steep and lovely woodland. Quieter than the usual way up,
and you pass some good rock scenery below the summit.

You mean within 93.75 miles? :-)

I still probably have several dozen within that radius, but none particularly close, or particularly
attractive.

The Wrekin incidentally is only just within and the other 4 I did this trip are without.

'fraid so, on 7th October 1972. 35 miles and a now unknown amount of ascent. It was (and maybe
still is) a 'pick your own route' challenge and it took me 14 hours and 20 minutes. The long
time occasioned at least in part by trying to follow PROWs picked from the 1" and, disturbing
often, overgrown, ploughed up or just no trace on the ground. The later was a particular problem
after dark.

There is the odd space... Last time I went up that way I was on my bike, but I am sure that it is
possible. Alternatively park in Forest Glen (Tourist Route), walk round and traverse the hill...

As an aside, the Forest Glen Pavillion (cafe) is now in the Blists Hill Museum. (now called the
Ironbridge Victorian Village or something).
