Get the 300D. As good as the Olympus is the Canon has the big advantage of changeable lenses. I
realise there are converters available for the olympus but the Canon is still the way to go IMO. The
reason for the drop in price on the Olympus is the introduction of their first proper DSLR.

Haven't seen any reviews, but the first thing that strikes me is that it's only 5MP. I think 6MP is
the minimum for quality equivalent to 35mm. After all, PhotoCD images are 3072 x 2048, which is 6MP.

Also, Doug pointed out that it doesn't use interchangeable lenses, so that's a big disadvantage.

As for battery life, the Canon battery is superb, the 300D uses the same as the G3 battery, and it's
never come close to running out with me. People claim to have used it for a week or more. It's rated
as being able to take 450 pics with the LCD on, including zooming (over 1000 with the LCD off).

Any telephoto lens you put on it will be 1.6x longer than normal, so a 300mm lens would be a 480mm,
so such cameras are great for telephoto.

Decent memory? Just buy some big Flash cards, they're cheap enough now. 6 meg per pic on the 300D
for top quality (RAW + JPEG), that's 85 pics on a 512 meg card. Buy a gig's worth and you won't run
out very often.

match. Although their sign in the shop says they will only match a local shop price, many have found
they will match online prices.

days ive been very happy with it so far.

For all your requirements you will need to spend a bit more on the 300D route. It doesnt come with
any memory, only 1 battery (though the life is pretty good) and max zoom (with the kit lens) is
eqivalent to 88mm.

They will price-match to online prices *providing* that the online supplier actually has the item in
stock at that time. (They normally make a phone call).

I think you'll find the reason for the discount on the E-20 is because Olympus have just launched
the professional Olympus-E System digital SLR with interchangeable lenses

If you've already invested in a Canon G3 or similar, you'll already have bought some memory (I've
got 544 meg) and can use the same battery, so you'll have two long life batteries.

Of course, if you're buying an SLR then buying extra lenses for it goes with the territory. Yes,
that does makes it more expensive, but that's the big advantage of SLR's - interchangeable lenses -
you buy the lenses that *you* want. So it's not really a disadvantage.

Tks for all yr advice. I rang 2 Jessops stores tdy - Chester
+ Llandudno, but zero stock. Llandudno gets one 300d per week and it disappears as soon as it
arrives. Actually I can vouch for that cos last Sat I went there and missed it by minutes - some
blighter was about to cough up for it!! Anyone responsible?? Anyway, I may have to order it
instead, but that reduces hagglability!

I'd been fantasising about the 50-500mm but I suspect it might be a bit on the heavy side, and thus
not ideal for carrying everywhere. I also really fancy the 15-30mm. Anyone know if the quality
(distortion etc.) is acceptable for a 35mm body rather than a digital SLR? (I think it was primarily
designed for digital SLR's).

Well the Sigma costs £499.99 from Jessops, but they threw in a 3 yr warranty after haggling. It's
big and heavy (but has a decent case, which can't be said abt the EOS 300D....). I can't comment abt
quality re 35mm v digital, but I was stunned at the images I took of deer (and overhead planes) that
I took testing it last Sunday at Tatton Park. However, after using Photoshop Elements, I think the
photos are amazing. Once I get a website.....I did as Carol Haynes suggested upload them (120 shots)
onto Canon Image Gateway, but the actual pic size doesn't do them justice.
