I would appreciate input as to what exactly are tempo rides..ie., cadance, gearing, length or effort, frequency. A lot of what I read suggests that early season preparation should include this type of training, whatever it is. Thank you all in advance.

Thank you all in advance.don't worry, i've been racing for 20 years now, and don't know what it is. or more exactly, the definition seems to vary from region to region (within the UK) and means different things abroard as well. gearing, duration and frequency (even if there was universal agreement on what it meant) would differ markedly between different fitness groups.

Charmichael calls it 'upper end aerobic work.' For me, they say it's the 156-160 bpm range, against my max HR of about 190.

for me, i am doing tempo rides once a week. 90min at 150bpm/240watts. thats 12bpm/60watts below threshold for me. gearing is slightly below time trial cadence or low 90rpms. i have been doing them on my trainer.
