a wheel dilemna

What to do, what to do. the good news I've worked out an awesome trade with a bike wrenching hubby of one of my gal pals. He get a custom fit one of these: http://www.bdel.com/gear/alpinism/alpine_shirt.php ( my version, of course) and I get 1000 mile teardown on the Kona. We each think we are getting a good deal, those are the best kind of arrangements. any way, the main issues are a slightly worn ( rought running) bottom bracket. That's a no brainer. Shimano XTR or what? Feel free to make a recommendation, other wise i'll just go XTR for $45, oh wait even better on sale for $29...) the rear hub is another story. Being as the Mavic cross rear wheel had an unfixable flat spot I pulled that off this summer and put a different rear wheel/ hub on the bike, something Carla sold me for $25.. Evidently the hub is spinning a little rough, is showing some wear, and should "perhaps" be replaced. Not that Carla sold me something bad, could just be wear?? I'm trying to figure out my options. The ideal option would be to get a new rear wheel disc wheel, but then I'd have to go front and get disc brakes while I am at it, and that is definately NOT on the budgetary horizon any time soon (other obligations). I talked to one shop who said that my mavic cross weird triple laced spokes could be re used, I'd just need a new rim... Is this true you can re-use spokes if they aren't damaged? Or is that a load? Or buy a whole new wheel, or keep the Mavic Cross Hub that came with the bike,( I'll have Paul check this of course), and get a new rim and have a new wheel built. Jerry, my head is spinning, I hate having to figure something like this out. Shoot, you build me a wheel and you'll get an alpinist shirt too!! any words of wisdom? thanks Penny

What to do, what to do.

As you may have heard I don't ride a geared bike anymore, but when I did I really loved the Rhino
Lite/Shimano LX combination. Those wheels were absolutely phenomenal.
From what I understand about Shimano the XTR basically shaves off a little weight as apposed to the
LX hubs. I've also heard that the LX hubs are more durable....
My advise is if you're looking to stay low cost you can't beat the Rhino Lite/LX combo.

Hear, hear! I'm running a Rhyno Lite on a regular Deore hub on the rear... holds up quite well for
light trials and jumping. The weight penalty isn't killer for the bombproofness.

Make sure it's compatible with your cranks. XTR brackets normally only go with XTR cranks, IIRC.
Also, make sure you get the right width to keep the correct chain line.

Not at all. You don't have to attach the disc to the wheel. It's perfectly possible to run a
standard rim with a disc hub (I run Hope XC disc hubs with X618CDs). You can then upgrade to discs
as and when you want. As an added bonus, should your (future) disc brakes fail for any reason, you
can just whack on a set of V's and you're good to go.

You can, but I'd be loath to unless they're fairly new.

Isn't the Mavic Cross hub proprietary?

As I said above, get a disc hub with a standard rim. Now as to which ones to go for, that would
depend on your budget...

Very true. I run the same combo. What's a few grams for longer use at a cheaper price?
