  1. I was wondering if all the wise people out there can help in some way. I have had a problem for
several months now which I cant seem to shake and I am tolerating it , but am not really able to do
    much more than that.

I am constantly very fatigued, some days are better than others, but it is always there to some
degree. No matter how tired or untired(excuse the word) I am I am NEVER alert.

One significant thing that I have noticed is that I can suddenly feel much worse after eating
various foods. The other morning, on an empty stomach I drank a glass of milk and what an amazing
effect it had on me!! From a couple of minutes afterwards I could hardly keep my eyes open and my
brain turned to mush! For the rest of the day I couldn't think straight or concentrate! The lights
were on but no one was home so to speak!

As a result over the last couple of days I have cut out foods that contain lactose. I still feel
very tired so I am not sure that milk was the direct cause. Other foods that seem to have some
effect are bananas, bread, Possibly rice.

When I am tired I am constantly craving pick-me- ups like bread and sugary coffee and pasta, but
this just tends to send me into a very sedated state (drowsy).

On the other hand when I try to go without high crab food like bread sugar, and pasta (being vary
careful to make up the deficit in nuts, vegetables ,fruit and meat) I also begin to feel very drowsy
and drunk like, but also feel down. This is in contrast to when I do eat these foods and feel very
drowsy and drunk , but with a regular normal/up mood.

The consequences of not eating these foods are far more severe than eating them?

I have been tested for :
    - reactive hypoglycaemia
    - skin test allergies to milk
    - liver tests
    - diabetes
    - thyroid

The only interesting thing that came up in the tests that my liver bilirubin level was high (the
same as that of an alcoholic – they told me this was gilberts syndrome).

I had a five hour fasting TT. I was at 4.8 before the glucose then :
2.2 hour 1, 3.4 hour two , 3.9. hour three, 4.8 hour four and then 5.1 hour five.

The doctor said that this was termed very mild 'reactive' hypoglycemia and this would not be the the
    cause of my symtoms.

If anyone has any ideas on where I can go from here I would be most appreciate. This is in actual
fact very debilitating and is having a significant impact on my quality of life.

    Any help is much appreciated.

    Cheers,

    Ray.

Try a lower carbohydrate diet for a few days and see what happens. i.e. less starch, milk, fruit
etc, lean towards small amounts of wholegrains, plenty of protein in the form of animal protein,
good fats etc and see if it makes a difference. Get hold of a tester and see what is happening at
the 15 minute mark, 1/2 hour, 45 minute etc, if you had 4.8 then the glucose, were 2.2 1 hour later
then you most likely had a very quick response to the glucose and an equally fast insulin response
which dropped you so low within a short period of time - just interesting to know what happened in
that first hour. When I had reactive hypoglycemia I had my largest and quickest drops after a bit of
porridge with milk. 30 minutes after eating that I would quite literally drop to the floor with
    total muscle exhaustion.

But all that aside, it would be an experiment to see what much smaller amounts of carb (slow acting
ones tempered with a bit of fat to slow absorption even further) does for the fatigue.

Example, Breakfast - 1/2 slice of grain bread with a generous serve of butter or marg, egg or two
or grilled cheese on the bread (toast or whatever) and if you have coffee usually, add cream
    instead of milk.

Try eating snack size portions about every two hours, for the purpose of trying to keep even blood
sugar levels, that is aiming not to have any significant rise thereby preventing any significant
    insulin production.

You could try various low carb (low starch) vegetables with main meals of just plain protein at the
    moment, while you are experimenting.

During this period don't touch milk, fruit, fruit juice, cereals, white anything, sugar, honey etc,
vegetables like potato, corn, peas, carrots, pumpkin, sweet potato. Even limit tomatoes and onions
during this experimental week. If two hours is too long between meals, try hourly, when I was first
diagnosed with RH I had to eat 1/2 hourly which I eventually was able to extend to 2 hourly. Always
use some sort of fat with your carb, peanut butter, mashed avocado, hard cheese, nuts (not too many
    - maybe an ounce at a time) butter, marg, olive oil as in a dressing etc.

For the significant carb part of a meal or snack alternate between - the 1/2 slice of grain bread,
whole-wheat crackers with the equivalent carb count. If this diet works then add certain fruits -
berries of most types are good, but small amounts, still remembering - aim to keep sugar levels
even. Eat the berries with fat, strawberries and cream with sugar free jelly, blueberries with
    cheese and a few nuts...

My email address is pretty easy to figure out if you need more real time advice, I think you are
about 2 hours ahead of me at the moment. Can give you my phone number if need be, also.

By the way, I think skin tests for milk involve raw milk, my son was terribly intolerant to
pasteurised milk but not raw. Try some raw goat's milk and see what is does to you. Goat's milk is a
bit inconsistent in flavour like human breast milk, can be sweet and beautiful one day and drinkable
only with nose held the next. I say goat's milk as there is a train of thought that says goat's milk
is better for glucose regulatory impairment than cow's milk - maybe sheep's milk is similar 🙂

Interesting. Meat does that to me. I can eat it only infrequently and in small doses.

Could be. That particular thing runs in my husband's family. His second cousin was diagnosed with
it. He and his brother have at times had high liver enzymes but have not as yet had a definitive
diagnosis. The second cousin only got a diagnosis after becoming very ill, being put in the hospital
and having the hospital tell him nothing was wrong. He works for a major drug company and he
prevailed upon his company to help him. They did, and only then did he find out what was wrong.

What type of Dr. said this? You are certainly having hypo symptoms and I see nothing mild about
them. Certainly this could cause these symptoms. But there may well be more to it. Failed adrenals
or Cushing's syndrome can also cause such symptoms. And I was just reading another of those articles
about "killer mold" in houses and you can also get such symptoms if you live where there is mold,
killer or not. Mold would not cause hypos, but it can make you ill.

The only thing I can suggest to you is keep trying different Drs. until you find one who can find
what is wrong with you. It took me several years and a move to a different state before some of my
    medical problems were diagnosed.

  5. Wow thank you so much for all the information...wow!!!

I guess the problem I have at the moment is that the doctor has told me that he doesnt think
reactive Hypo would be causing my symptoms. Part of the reason he made that assumption was that I
dont recover fairly quikly as a result of eating something high carb?

I do have anothe couple of questions.

Why do I wake in the morning feeling like I havnt had a sleep?

Why does food seem to have such a big effect first thing in the morning rather than later
    in the day?

I am not sure whether it is Hypo or maybe allergic to some food. I felt OK first thing this morning
until I tried to have two fried eggs, two fried tomatoes and a cup of tea (with milk, and sugar
replacement. (all the fried food was an attemp to have a low carb breakfast).

Its amazing because as early as fove minutes after eating this I felt and overwhelming desire to
close my eyes, that was all I wanted to do
    !!! Unreal!

I will definitely try and change my diet somemore, I was never aware that it was a good idea to
    restrict milk!!!!

Anyways...I have an appointment with a dietician on Wedensday so I will see how that goes!!

Thanks so much for all your help and support!! Thanks to everyone!!!

  6. Thanks for all the help and advice! Like I said I have a Dieticians appointment in a couple of days
so will ahve to see how that goes.

Do you know what a good healthy blood glucose range should be?

    Cheers.

  7. I know how you're feeling -- I have many of the same symptoms. However, I've been lucky to discover
much of the cause, though eradicating the symptoms has been elusive. First, take a good look at your
home. You have synmptoms that I would associate with mold. Don't assume that it will be visible.
Find someone with a good nose to sniff around -- or get an environmental testing company to come in
to test the air. Also, you say you've been skin tested for milk allergy -- this is only good if you
have an immediate-type or inflammatory response (IgE) allergy. You might have a delayed-response
allergy, which would require a blood test for IgG sensitivity. Have you been tested for mold allergy
or for Candida? Your carb reactivity could actually be from yeast in you system being fed by the
carbs. Best of luck, and do post updates on your condition!
