So yesterday my work was offering free A1C tests for everyone who wanted to take one...neat little device, after 8 minutes, you get your result. I am sure there is some inaccuracies with it but nonetheless they told me it was pretty accurate.
I had just recently had my A1C measure while at the doctors on October 8th and that is when I found my number to be high, it was 7.1. I then altered my diet and now, according to the reading yesterday, was 5.8. :-) I know this is not perfect but it is a step in the right direction!

Congratulations, however, you must remember that you cannot directly compare 2 different A1c tests unless you are sure that they reference the same normal range. There are many methods for measuring A1c and even in labs using the same method there are differences in the normal range due to subtle differences in technique or population. There is a standardization effort to try to get everyone reporting with a consistent normal range (the DCCT range of 4.0-6.0%), but it doesn't seem to have made much progress. Most, but not all, of the quick A1c kits comply. In my last survey of m.h.d. folks the percentage receiving A1c tests with complying normal ranges was in the small double digits.
