Back in 1987, I was tested for hypoglycemia. I did the 6 hour fast with a test every hour. I was
told that I needed to eat frequently, otherwise I would feel faint, out of it etc... well I didn't
deal with it too well and there were times that I was told that the hypoglycemia could "turn" at any
time to diabetes. Well that went in one ear and out the other. So now the table has turned and I
have Type II diabetes. I'm 37, 5'1/2", 157 lbs. I was dx Oct 21st. Other than feeling out of it if I
didn't eat, I was not having any symptoms. I had my annual exam and my fasting bg was 9mmol/L. They
wanted me to come in again in 1 month, which I did. This fasting bg was 12mmol/L. Since I had 2
reading above 7mmol/L, that classified me as diabetic. Now, ever since Oct 21, I have tested myself
2x a day: fasting and 2 hours after a meal (usually lunch). My numbers were fasting btwn 9 and 12,
and my 2 hr bg was btwn 9 and 13. I started metformin Nov 5th. 500mg 2x a day. I have not had any
hypoglycemic effects or bg readings. My numbers are down to 6.9 fasting and 6.8 2 hr bg. Some of my
fasting numbers have been higher than my 2hr numbers.
Has anyone else "started" out as hypoglycemic and then "turned" to diabetic? Is it common now that I
have not been hypo? I've heard that metformin reduces the chances of hypoglycemia.
I got my period yesterday. Today I took a Tylenol PMS pill this morning and probably did not eat
enough this morning b/c I really felt spaced out for most of the day. My morning fast was 7.0mmol/L.
Since I felt lousy, I tested 1 hour after eating ( a piece of bread......probably a no no) and my
reading was 8.9mmol/L) Since this was a familiar feeling, I was a little surprised that it was 8.9.
I thought maybe it would be low towards hypo, but it's not.
Still a lot to learn I guess.......
