  1. A week ago I decided to leave starch choices out of breakfast just to see what the difference would
be one hour after eating. I am a mild diabetic type 2 on diet alone. Every breakfast meal consisted
of protein, fat (not saturated) fruit and/or vegies. Each reading taken one hour after breakfast was
3 mmol/L lower than the reading with the starch in it basically going from 8-9 mmol/L to 5-6 mmol/L.
My weight at 1 week has not changed. I often have hypo spells in the a.m. and I haven't had one so
far on this change. I would like to change my diet to leaving out all starches for awhile but do not
know if this is healthy and don't know if I should start the saturated fat like Atkins diet does as
I would like to lose 10 ibs.or so. Any guidance would be appreciated.

Trust your meter. According to my endocrinologist, low-carbing will be the standard base treatment
for type 2 diabetes in 10 years. He said he wishes all his type 2 patients were doing what I'm
doing, which is doing low-carb and taking metformin for cardiac protection.

You don't have to increase saturated fat when you low-carb unless you want to. You will want to
increase fat in general, though, to keep your meals satisfying. Try heart-healthy fats like olive
oil, canola oil, avocados, nuts, fatty fish, and so on.

If you do a google on this newsgroup and newsgroup alt.support.diabetes for "low carb", you will
find a lot of type 2 diabetics who are low-carbing to treat their diabetes. I suggest also alt.support.diet.low-
carb. Most of the people there are doing Atkins, but not all. I do general low-carb, eating to my
meter. I'd guestimate I eat between 50 and 100 grams of carb a day. I've been doing this since my
diagnosis last January, and I've very slowly but steadily been losing weight since then. I don't own
a scale, but from weighings at my MD's office and how my clothes are fitting differently, I'd say
I've lost over 30 lbs so far, without (for the most part) a serious sense of deprivation. I also
keep moderately tight control of my BG -- 80-130 most days.

    Good luck!

In order to lose weight you may need to modify your other meals as well. It may take a while for
    weight loss to be noticeable.

How do you define hypo? Most T2s don't really go hypo, but lower than usual BG may feel like it.
Also sudden changes in BG can feel like it.

There is zero evidence that ultra low carb diet is dangerous in the short term, unless there is some
other medical condition. Its very difficult to eliminate all carbs as almost all vegetables have
some carbs in them, fruit has more.

It is not necessary to go to a high saturated fat diet. I think Atkins in he latest edition even
cautions against too much saturated fat.

I did what you are talking about and lost 40 lbs in 6 months. Keep in mind that some dietary changes
must be permanent, or you will quickly gain the lost weight back.

It really irks me when people use this term? What in the heck is a mild diabetic?

I see no reason at all to cut out all starches, and I don't think this is a healthy diet. However,
if your numbers are too high, (and I think 8-9 are too high), then you are eating more carbs than
your body can handle. Try cutting back on carbs at the times when you have high BG and if this
    doesn't help, you need meds.
