Saw the doc yesterday. A1C was down to 5.4. This time last year is was 6.8. Cholesterol not too good
and will have to have Lipitor - 10mg. Anyone else taking it? I tired the diet for lowering
cholesterol for 4 months and it did not help. Will stay on both food programs. Doc said I may be
able to come of the 500 mg. glucophage XR in February if BGs are in good control. Betty.

I didn't take Lipitor but I did take a statin. It knocked down my cholesterol within three months. I
don't have to take it anymore because my cholesterol is staying with acceptable ranges without it
now. I had to stop it because of muscle pain. Oh, and I don't follow a low cholesterol diet either.Congrats on the A1c! c

Good Job on the A1c. Seems everyone is changing to XR, I wonder if I should ask, maybe my Dr.
doesn't even know about it. My most recent lipid panel shows that my diet is reducing my "bad"
cholesterol, but my good cholesterol is still terrible. Must be a thing with T2's, good bad
cholesterol, bad good cholesterol. <<sigh>> Off to exercise, does anyone really LIKE to exercise?

diagnoses of my various ailments. As far as I know, I have had no side effects. It did reduce my cholesterol and triglyceride levels
but they didn't come down to "normal" levels until I lost lots of weight post-diagnosis.What do they change in the "diet for lowering cholesterol"? Is it low saturated fat, or low ingested
cholesterol, or both (or neither)?Cheers Alan, T2, Oz dx May 2002, diet and not enough exercise.

I really don't know. If my next lab results support it, I'm going to ask my doc if I can stop for a
while because I am hoping my dietary changes may mean it's no longer necessary. When it was first prescribed I was obese and probably an uncontrolled pre-diabetic.

I was on a statin. I stopped because of leg pain. My cholesterol did go up but from a total of 123
to 161. It's still well within the acceptable range. My weight loss and diabetic control helped. The
doc said the diabetes probably caused it to go high and then the statin brought it down and now my
body manages to keep it in normal range. Makes sense to me.c

What kind of exercise do I need to do? Doc just says exercise. Then son says what I call exercise
(mowing the lawn and other stuff) is work. Now that I have the weight off and BGs under control,
need to work on "exercise." Betty. -

Both. I had already cut out all fried foods and have used skim milk for years. Cut out pork and
beef. Eat fish, chicken and soy for protein. There is a soy cheese made by Galaxy Foods of Orlando
called "Veggie Slices." It is sliced like real sandwich cheese and makes a great grilled cheese
sandwich. There are several flavors including Pepper Jack.At our stores here it is in the produce
department. I do not eat eggs. Did not like them anyway. I use Smuckers peanut butter. No
hydrogenated fats. Stick to polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats. I eat oatmeal every morning
for breakfast. None of this worked in lowering the overall cholesterol. But I am sure the body
appreciates the changes. Betty. -

Beside outside and inside housework I try (really) to ride my recumbent stationary bike at least 4
miles (20 minutes) a day. I need to start lifting some weights also. I'm thinking that while riding
I can use handweights, but I haven't really looked into it yet. I also go mall-walking at least once
a week. Twice around Rosedale Mall (both levels) is 7000 steps.

Betty, sorry but I tuned into this note and not your original note, so I'll answer the current post.
I was originally told to do "20 minutes three times a day, intensive excercise - one that makes you
sweat". I soon found myself that excercise was powerful in crashing my bg. I found that an excercise
bike didn't have much effect - probably because I lacked the motivation - but hopping on a real
bicycle and doing 40 minutes at the highest speed I could muster, did wonders. I would start off
with a maximum bg of over 11 an hour after eating, go on my bike ride, then come back with a bg of
less than 6. - I found at one stage that going on my bike ride too soon after eating would crash my
bg, but then my bg would bounce back (thanks Beavis). At one stage I was going on such a bike ride
almost every day of the week. Unfortunately riding a bike around Melbourne tends to get dangerous
because of lunatic drivers, especially at night when you get yobbos who deliberately try to kill
you, so I reduced my bike riding drastically over the past year or so - unfortunately.I think that as well as setting a period of excercise, you need to lead an active lifestyle. It's no
use doing your half hour or so of excercise a day, then dropping down on the couch and watching TV
for most of the day. Often I will have so much work to do around the house and car that I will skip
my excercise and still manage to control my bg adequately.Henry Australia

the other way on things like cheese and other foods that have "low fat" or "low carb" alternatives.
Where possible I buy less in quantity but more variety of the real thing and have much smaller
serves; or use my meter to find when I can eat a reasonable serve. When I looked at soy milk and
cheese, there seemed to be almost as much sat fat and just as much total fat. Maybe we get different
varieties. Didn't like the taste anyway ;-)Cheers Alan, T2, Oz dx May 2002, diet and not enough exercise.

Have you tried natural PB - like "Crazy Richards?" I use it, not much
mixing, it's pure ground peanuts - no added sugar, etc. I even mix it
with my oatmeal. I've been able to raise my HDL from 35 (low) to 69
now - better diet, more exercise, and moderate drinking. I follow
