My mom is age 62 diabetic, and has high blood pressure. She gets very serious indigestion on occasion. The doctor just tells her to take over the counter medicine for it. Can anyone recommend a good over the counter medication that is safe for diabetics with high blood pressure?
no OTC stuff works for me, but Tagamet USED to work for me; then I switched to Prevacid which I regard as a miracle drug. I no longer have heartburn and hiatal hernia attacks. One pill a day keeps the tummy at bay. Sounds like mom should make an appointment with a gastro doc for evaluation...

I buy the sugar free Tums in the orange cream flavor. They work well for me. Wal-Mart always has them in my town.

She should probably see a Dr. who can ferret out the source of the indigestion. This is something I very rarely get. When I do, I find that ginger helps. You can buy a fresh ginger root, peel and slice it, then boil it for tea. Be careful though because if you use too much ginger or cook it for too long it gets VERY spicy! A quicker remedy is to use powdered ginger. Fill a gelatin capsule or two with it and take it like a pill.

Thank You.
Sil.
I used to use Epsom Salts, but after some time I discovered my problem was spicy food, curry, chilli, and the like. So I changed my diet, and no longer the Salts. Maybe, just a teensy-weensy little maybe, your Mom has a food problem like that.

Thanks(all) for your help. Sadly I had to take Mom to the hospital two days ago. They said she had a mild heart attack. But the day I brought her in they said it was a gastro problem. They even took an ekg test and blood test. Now they say her heart was involved. I wonder if a severe gastro attack can bring on a heart attack?
Yes, I do low carb, cut out a lot of the spicy stuff too, and I very seldomly have heartburn anymore.

And the extra calcium in Tums is also very good for 62YO females!
Even without heartburn, post-menopausal women should chew a Tums per day
unless they're already taking a calcium supplement.

....or getting plenty of calcium in their diet, which some do. I know I used to. But I drink much less milk since dm than I used to, and since thyca my needs have gone up. So I usually take a supp to get from the 900-1000 in my diet to the 1500mg/day I should have. bj
Prevacid allows me to eat pretty much whatever I want without suffering terrible heartburn. Many years ago (before being diabetic) I used to eat all the wrong stuff like bacon every morning, lots of pepper, Mexican food, fatty foods, liquor, etc. When in the military all they gave me was Maalox, which I would drink by the bottle to help with the pain. After over 10 years of suffering, I got a RX for Tagamet, but I still had to refrain from eating/drinking the bad stuff. Now, with Prevacid, a pepperoni pizza and occasional beer is no problem. Controlling my bg after pizza isn't as easy as controlling the heartburn (even with an insulin pump)!
