  1. Hey everyone!

I've been using Lantus for about a month and half now and haven't had any trouble. I'm wondering
what others people's experiences have been using Lantus? Anyone here pass out at night using it? It
seems to lower you blood sugar so slowly that you would probably wake up before you passed out. (at
    least that's what I hope)

I take 8.5-9 units about an hour before I go to bed and use maybe 25-30 units of humalog
throughout the day. I haven't had a blood sugar over 200 in 3-4 weeks…. of course I think this is
    because I'm a recent
T1. I have a twin brother who's using a pump and his blood sugar can hit 400+ every now and then
("my head feels like it's going to explode"😉.

  2. My experience with Lantus was basically good. It kept my blood sugars manageable, with the Humalog I
took to cover carbs. However, it did not cover my dawn phenomenon. It also stopped working after
about 22 hours, leaving me with incredible spikes in blood glucose. I'm a big fan of Lantus, if it
works. But I'm also a big fan of pumps, which is what I'm using now.

"Recent T1" implies that you are still making some self-generated insulin which makes control a
lot easier. That's one difference between you and your brother and his occasional 400's.

A normal Lantus dose is about 0.25 units per kg body weight per day, or about half your total daily
insulin needs. Your dose is quite small so you seem to be getting some additional basal insulin from
    "somewhere".

See RK's post on duration. The manufacturer "brags" about steady 24-hour absorption. However, the
actual range is 16 -34+ hours. If you are one of the fast absorbers, your bG can jump into the 300
mg/dL range when the Lantus wears off.

You're probably immune to this for a while since it looks like you are still making some
    of your own.

Your doc started you on one of the most modern and powerful insulin regimes around. Enjoy. Folks
using some of the old fashioned therapies don't have nearly the level of control that you and your
    brother enjoy.

    Regards
    Old Al

My experience is close to Juan's, Lantus is good if it works right, on some it doesn't. For me it
stopped working after 19hrs, I also would get horrible rises, I'd correct and in 3-5hrs be right
hight again. I'm now pumping as well.

I'd suggest you talk to your doctor about how much you're taking, Lantus is a basal, and should be
about 40-50% of your total daily insulin need, the figures you give are far less then that. Also,
Lantus is very flat, for most, you won't even see it lower you, really it shouldn't, should just
keep you at a flat line, using your bolus to set your bg after meals.

    good luck.

  5. I've been usin Lantus for a few years. It works well for me. My regime, however, is a little
different. I guess that I absorb the Lantus more quickly than the 24 hour mark. I take 13u of Lantus
in the morning, Humolog in the morning, Humolog at lunch, Humolog at dinner, and then I take 11u of
Humilin N at bedtime. This seems to be working pretty well for me at the moment. I tend to run out
of Lantus during the night. I have taken Lantus at bedtime, and I have split the Lantus between
bedtime and breakfast, but those regimes didn't quite work for me. Steph

  6. if I wasn't on the pump I would definitely try Lantus but as one member said the dawn phenomenon,
which I have, is not covered well by Lantus.

  7. i have had great results with lantus, finally stopped having highs and lows and now also have the
ability to eat when i want and not when my insulin says i should. humalog and lantus make life more
    livable and diabetes less controlling.

  8. Hi fellow type 1's,

Lantus was a huge improvement for me but the pump is the ultimate other than the real thing.

My experience is just like Steph's except my doses are a little higher, timing is the dame.
