  1. I test 45 minutes after meals - when my BG usually peaks. Is 160 too high? That's what my highest
carb meal yields. Also, for my medium carb meal (1/2 cup oatmeal + 1/2 cup yogurt + 2 tablespoons
peanut butter) I get BG numbers 45 minutes later ranging from 100 to 140. Is that usual?

  2. yogurt, oatmeal and pb is a MEAL? Aye, yi, yi! Once in a blue moon, I'll have a pb sandwhich and
blueberry yogurt, but not as a staple of my diet!

How do you know that 45 minutes is your peak?

Look for these numbers, they are non-diabetic:

1 hour post meal: Under 140 2 hours post meal: Under 120

But you are certainly headed in the right direction.

I wouldn't worry about the 45 minute mark. So long as you are >140 at an hour after eating and >120
at two hours after eating. I don't think many of us here bother to test at 45 minutes after eating.

It'd be slightly too high if the test was done 1 to 2 hours after your meal, but at 45 minutes, it's
    not possible to extrapolate.

That's what my highest carb meal yields. Also, for my medium

Have you seen how much sugar is in a 1/2 cup of yoghurt? (that's if it's "regular" yoghurt) I'd be
happy with those numbers if I ate that much in carbs anyway.

  6. why would you be testing at 45mins after? when food doesn't start digesting till 90min!.. 45min is a
total waste of strip and inaccurate reading.

but at 45mins at 160 I'll bet you're hitting close to 250 by 60-90mins if not higher.. especially
    with that meal.. lol

try eggs & 1 slice of toast, will do you much better.

What I'm about to say applies to ME and will probably not apply to many diabetics, as this is
    frequently the case with diabetes.

I find my bg reaches it's maximum anywhere between half an hour to one hour or more after eating. It
depends on what I eat - how quickly it's absorbed. Once it reaches maximum (whatever that might be)
it may sit there for over an hour, sometimes two, also depending on what I have eaten. If you have
reasonable control of your diabetes your bg should drop after two hours.

This morning I woke up with a rather high fasting bg of 145, probably due to the 'morning effect'
many diabetics seem to have. (My average fbg over the past few months has been around 128). Perhaps
unwisely because of it's high carb content, for breakfast I had a thin slice of light rye sour dough
bread with light ricotta cheese. Suppose it sounds healthy, but after an hour my bg went up to a
whopping 218! Hopped on my bike, did about 9 miles riding as intensive as my age and thick tyres and
tubes would allow, then on return found my bg to be a more respectable 110 (with no medication
having been taken). Note that eating exactly the same food may have a different effect when eaten at
    lunch or dinner.

A long while ago, in a moment when I lost my willpower and ate a large muffin for dessert, my bg
went over 230 and stayed there for over two hours, despite me having taken medication beforehand. I
was too tired then to work it off by excercising, but did measure my bg frequently to see what it
    was doing.

I don't mean to suggest to any diabetic, especially a newbie, as to what they will expect to find,
but I'm just relating my own experience (I get the results of my last HbA1c in a few days, so I'll
have a better idea which way I'm heading).

I suggest you experiment with foods and times by occasionally going on a 'binge' of measuring to see
what is happening. This is the best way of knowing what has whate effect on your bg.

Henry Age 55+, Type II, diagnosed 1995 but probably had diabetes for at least ten years before that.

  8. oatmeal - yogurt and peanut butter.
are you sure you have diabetes? you just might be pregnant 🙂.
1/2 cup of yogurt don't say much - how many carbs did it have? how much sugar per half cup? why do
you have different size meals? is that a diet a doctor gave you? Tom

Sorry RK, but we're all a little different, and different foods also seem to hit the system at

minute reading is back to normal if the 60 minute wasn't too high. If my one-hour is excessive the
two-hour could be either high or heading for a T2 hypo; 11 (200) at one hour probably means under 4
    (70) at two hour. Thankfully that doesn't happen often nowadays. So YMMV.

  11. Dave,

I know oatmeal, yogurt and pb sounds weird but it's cheap and actually tastes good. I usually have 7
meals a day. Tonite at 6 pm I had 1/2 cup oatmeal (1.5 cups cooked) mixed with 2.5 tablespoons
natural PB. At my peak (45 minutes) BG was 101. Later at 9 pm I had one cup lite yogurt mixed with
1/2 pound blueberries and two tablespoons almond butter. At 9.45 my BG was 114. Don't lose your
money in the stock market like I did, you may have to stock up on oatmeal and PB!

Christ Beav can you imagine if it took 45 minutes to digest stuff .. my hypo control would be well

  15. Hee, hee, I've lost PLENTY (percentage wise) in mutual funds myself. It's STARTING to come back a
bit... It's all 401K which I don't touch yet, so it still has a few years to come back. I LIKE PB
anyway. I love English muffins but they raise my bg too much so I've been eating stone ground whole
wheat toast instead. It's just not the same...

    G'day Alan,

I haven't noticed any lows after qhs, but then again I'm not sure I measured for them. Problem is
that whenever I think there's some pattern, things turn out different. At lunch, again unwisely, I
had this restaurant meal of toasted bread with salmon and eggs. An hour after - 12.1 (Australian
figures) That's no good On my bike again for another 11 kilometres, reluctantly, because I was
buggered. Brought it down to 3.9 - that's better. At dinner - it was an unwise day - I ended it with
a croissant. An hour after? 6.1 - go figure. By the way, both at lunch and dinner I took half a
Diamicron tablet before and a 500mg tablet of Metformin after.

As far as excercise, seeing my meter go into double figures is a great motivator for working it off
with excercise - quick and efficient. Trouble is that I am increasingly too tired. I suppose that is
    the case with you too.

    Keep well.

    Henry

  17. beav, might I suggest you do a bit more research

  19. Right, we're all different. In my case I'm insulin resistant. A glucose tolerance test showed a peak
BG at 45 minutes of 200 - by 2 hours I was getting hungry - BG 70. Also, it's possible that
different meals could peak at different times. I believe fats may delay the peak BG time. It's
likely that 160 at 45 minutes was not my peak with a meal that was 50% fat (by calories). There's a
limit to how many times I'm going to poke myself!
