  1. You've sometimes stated that recipes you submit are taken from various published cookbooks. I would
like to ask you, therefore, if you could show some respect towards the authors/creators of these
recipes by including their source, ie, author's name, book name, etc.

    Thank you

I try to when I can. The problem is a while back I did a whole bunch of data entry of recipes
without marking which recipe came from which book so now sometimes have a difficult time tracking
down which recipe came from which source. Also, many recipes I publish come from magazines or my
collection of bizarre out of print cookbooks found at charity shops or used book stores. Some of
those do not list the recipe creators names. For instance, the Marmite recipes I just posted came
from a Marmite recipe book published by the company...

Also, most of the recipes I post I'll simplify or 'internationalise' or offer ingredient
alternatives or change around from my experience etc. At what point does a recipe stay with the
author or become something new? I guess I could put 'inspired by' or similar credit in this case.

I also post recipes from non-vegetarian cookbooks. I would hate for someone to see a cookbook
reference posted and have that person purchase the cookbook only to discover that there is only one
or two vegan recipes in it. If a person asks me for a recipe reference, I can give out that type of
    information about the book.

If there is a specific recipe you are curious about then let me know and I'll try and track down
it's source. Posting the recipes is supposed to inspire conversation and asking for a recipe source
is a good way to establish two-way converstaion about a recipe, is it not?

I do pretty much the same as you - scavenge and collect all sorts of recipes from all kinds of
sources. Many of which I modify to my tastes, local ingredients, or for what I have on hand. I try
to cite the original source if I can, at least how I obtained the recipe, what I did as modifying
the recipe for my own reasons, and also add notes on how it turned out/was received.

A great reason for trying to include the original source is so others can look there for themselves.
If you present 4 recipes from a collection of 200, there are many other possibilities that others
might want to look to as well, or perhaps would enjoy reading the non-recipe sections to understand
more about the author's cooking approach.

Food is part of a journey that defines us, our culture, and the changes made along the way. A
journal of your experiences and how they were influenced broadens understanding for others.

Thanks for all you do Mr. Falafel.

Some of the recipies you have found for me have made a big difference in my daily life...like
    workable vegan kasha.

Just out of curiosity. rec.food.veg encourages only vegan recipeis to be posted and it is well
moderated ( the content is JUST about recipes, food etc ). Given that why do you post here?

    correction. rec.food.veg.cooking.

They are very well moderated. They encourage posting only vegan recipies and the content is 99.8% (
.02 % for thank you notes ) about vegetarian cooking only.

Given that Mr. Falafel seems to be exclusively interested in vegan cooking it would seem like the
better fit given the nature of the content of alt.food.vegan.

Not trying to convince him of anything, just thinking out loud.

I don't know why he does it, but am thankful that he does. Don't try to kidnap him from us,
    to r.f.v ;0)

Hm, maybe I should pop by in r.f.v and see what it looks like.

I don't think repeated copyright violations is a positive thing.

  12. I agree. He is one of the few that stays on topic. I think you can share
    recipes without violating copyright.

Doesn't look like anybody cares where the recipes come from as no one has asked for a specific
recipe's source since this was posted. Another non-issue, I guess.

    rec.food.veg is unmoderated

It used to be like this group, but it seems to be mostly abandoned.

Of course not. Not to the unethical it isn't. As there are no 'ethical' vegans here on usenet, it
works out well for you, doen't it?

I found out, and wondered why you had called it unmoderated. I've now changed to

It's not a non-issue for me. While I don't have a specific recipe that I'd like the source for, I
really do think that it's respectful to those who created the recipes to be referenced in some way.

My family has produced several cookbooks and I know that it really pisses me off when I see those
recipes pirated on the 'net with absolutely no credit give to the people who created them. They may
have a few things changed, but they are close enough to be recognizable. I'm all for information
sharing, but I don't see a contradiction between sharing information and crediting its source.

I think it's great that you, Mr Falafel, share so many recipes on this group. But I do think that
you should take responsibility for the fact that you're not crediting them, and that in doing so,
you're not giving recognition to the people who've developed the recipes (rather than writing it
off as a 'non'issue'😉. Perhaps you could try to incorporate sources into any new recipes you add to
    your database?

    Just my 2 cents, Jay

    Early Sunday morning typos 🙂.

    Just for clarification:

    rec.food.veg is unmoderated.

rec.food.veg.cooking is strongly moderated. The content is about recipies and cooking.....period.
They strongly encourage posting only vegan recipies and about 99% of the recipies are vegan.

Responding to my own post....how low can I go?

Anyway, I was just looking at some of the most recent recipe posts and I noticed that some of them
have already been credited. Just wanted to say thanks for that. I appreciate it. =)
