  1. I was just wondering about the above term. One online dictionary says something about hardening
    plastics and rubber. The stuff used with patches always used to be called rubber solution.

    Also when I touch the stuff my ears don't go pointy and my blood stays red.

    Any thoughts ?

    AFAIK Vulcanisation is the process of converting soft natural rubber to the rubber as we know it by
    adding sulphur and heating as invented by Charles Goodyear.

    I wonder what type of adhesive is used on self-adhesive patches such as Leeches.

    Somebody in a club I used to cycle with swore by using good old superglue for fixing pathces onto
    inner tubes. I tried it and hated the idea. I cannot remember whether he used high or low pressure
    tyres (I guess superglue could work at around 40psi but perhaps not at 100psi).

    The same chap used rubber solution to glue up the rubber seal on his LED lights to make them both
    extra water proof and to prevent theft of batteries. It couldn't be removed easily by hand or lever,
    but when needing to replace the batteries a small blade would be suitable to slice all the way
    around the seal.

    He also had a patch stuck over the on/off button to make it extra waterproof, which I thought was a
    clever idea. Now I'm not sure if rubber solution or superglue was used for this!

    Vulcanisation is the process of forming sulphur bonds between rubber molecules to make the rubber
    harder and tougher. According to Jobst Brandt, "vulcanising rubber solution" doesn't actually
    vulcanise at all.

    Yes and I thought it really was until I learned that it or patch doesn't vulcanise or amalgamate at
    all. Heat a patch of a patched tube by pressing against a heated nonstick frying pan and it can be
    peeled off.

    Normal patches use a dry cement, like the rubber solution after it's dried. The dry contact adhesive
    on the two surfaces then bonds.

    "Glueless patches" use a more tacky adhesive that only needs one surface glued.
