  1. My Cateye Cordless 2 cyclocomputer will not transmit any data when it is cold outside. Approximately
0 degrees Celsius and below. It will work for a few minutes if real cold and a little longer if not
so cold. The problem seems to be in the receiver/computer as if I bring it inside when stopping for
a Coffe break it will work again when I restart. I tried changing batteries and it doesn't fix the
problem only makes it slightly better. This is the second winter now and I am 100% sure it is due to
    low temperature and nothing else.

Has anybody out there been able to resolve this problem? I'm thinking maybe there is another battery
I can put in the computer that is more resistant to low temperatures or something of the kind.

usually you need a lower temp for such problems. below freezing. lithium batteries are recommended
in really cold climates. my cateye regular worked fine at 18 degrees. glad I dumped cordless it is
    too much of a hassle.

I've spoke to the tech people with Cat Eye out in Colorado, and they acknowledge they have a problem with the Cordless 2, and the newer replacement, the Cordless 7. They do not recommend the use of these 2 models in colder temps.

ditching the Cordless II and going with standard models. I frigged around with everything I could
think of, but was unable to keep it working below 2C.

Isn't the Cateye battery already lithium? CR2032. So why did yours work and not mine? I do have a
pre 2002 model that has less reach than the models produced from 2002 and on. However it 's plenty
    close enough in the summer.

Do the transmitter and receiver have a clear view of each other? How far apart are they? It might be
worth trying a small experiment to see if your setup is marginal to begin with. If so, decreased
battery performance might put it over the edge. To rule out setup, why not take the computer piece
and tape it to your fork a couple of inches from the transmitter. If it works, you might have an
issue with the placement of the transmitter and/or receiver.

FWIW, I have an near fatally injured Cordless 2 which seemed to work fine sub 32F. The right button
stopped working which made it fairly difficult to use, and impossible to set the proper diameter for
    bigger winter tires.

It may be simply that your display is frozen That happens somewhere around zero C.

Your main problem is that you live in a country which is cold, dark, and wet. I suggest you move
    to Mallorca.

I hear about this problem a few weeks ago (which I have been getting with my Sigma 800), so, after a
few miles, I lifted my front wheel and put my ear to the reciever on the fork.

...You might have heard this before already, but inside that little piece, there is a reed switch
which is closed by the passing magnet on your spoke. This sends a pulse to the computer and with
information on the wheel's diameter, determines the speed. If it misses some, the speed will be
slower. If your punk friend puts a second magnet on you wheel, you will keep up with traffic. Etc...

Anyway, it didn't click each time. I suspect that condensation is freezing the reed switch in both
our cases. Mine isn't a nice computer and hasn't been treated nicely, either, so I'm not surprised.

Do this test at home and in the cold, and tell me how it works out.

I've used my Sigma model (BC400 or something), with a cordless setup, down to about -6C, and
there was no problem or hassle. I am yet to test it in colder weather. I've been using the same
battery now for for well over a year, and no problemo. When its cold, the LCD is a tad sluggish,
    but nothing major.

This leads me to think that perhaps the original poster has a problem with setup rather than cold
really. The Sigma was pretty picky where the bits had to be placed in order to work. Perhaps if
the setup really stretches thouse limits, the cold causes things to fall apart?

You are not alone. I owned one of these for a fortnight a little while ago. It worked during the
day, but on cold nights/mornings it didn't (unless the computer unit was held about 8 inches or so
from the sensor) - like yours, seemed to fail around 0 Celsius. I resolved the issue by taking it
back to the shop and exchanging it for a corded one that has worked flawlessly ever since - I
suspect this is the only answer!

I fnally managed to find something describing my problem on the Cateye homepage.
    cateye.comtrouble.php

They clearly state that pre 2002 models does have a much shorter transmission range and can be
problematic in the cold. When I mailed the URL to my local Cateye retailer he said. Uuhh OK mail
your sensor to us and we'll fix it. So hopefully now I'll get a sensor that transmits twice as far
and it should fix my problem.

However I am kind of worried that Andrew Muzi is right in his assumption that the display freezes,
because that is what it looks like. Oh well I'll know in a couple of days and I'll report back here.

Hi Perre, Still strugling like me and my Sigma BC1600 w/cordless. I've sent the RDS cordless set up
back to SigmaSport in Germany. I couldn't find out what caused the problems with it. It worked
flawlessly for the first three to four weeks then started to fail. I guess the temp went down during
that period (I'm in Norway), but it worked OK at least down to -8C. The first I discovered was that
it started to display too low speed and finally went down to zero. This could happen even if the
temperatur was above freezing. Then after a couple of more days it could suddently "freeze" to a
fixed speed. I've tried to change batteries, moved the transmitter up/down the fork but nothing
seems to help. I've even tried to switch off my light as I got a tip from another fellow on r.b.r
that the light could interrupt the transmission, but still the same. The strange thing is that after
the bike and computer set up have rested for a while out in the sched it would work for a few more
minutes even if the temperatur is way below zero. Another strange thing is that when the computer
"freeze" I can remove it from the mount but it will still go about one minute before it is
"released" and the speed displayed is zero. The wired set up works fine all the time. I've been
running both systems at the same time and moved the computer over to the wired set up when the other
one failed. I hope the new one I'll get from SigmaSport will work better. Hjalmar

Yes I decided I didn't want to spend another winter without it. I had such a hazzle calculating my
total ridden distance for 2003 😉 Last winter I had my Polar S720i as a backup but this winter I've
got the Polar sensors mounted on another bike. The Polar wireless speed and cadence sensors works
absolutely perfect side by side with the Cateye. I've probably had it running down to -15C.

So I finally made it out with my new Sensor and it worked flawlessly in temperatures between 0 and
-5 Celsius. I think it's pretty cool of Cateye to honor a product they sold almost three years ago
and upgrade it to newest specs. The only thing I paid was return shipping for the old sensor.

I also had the sensor for my Sigma BC1600 returned back to SigmaSport in Germany. Got it back one
week after, delivered on the door. I've done a few rides since then and so far so good. I've been
out in temperatures down to -12C. I'm still not quite convinced though. The first one worked for
about a month before it started to err. I'll let you know if the same thing happens with this
    one. Hjalmar
