cycling magazines

There is no "best", only what you like the most, and that is a personal decision. For me it varies, one month I may actually like VeloNews, another I may like another, the only one I'd never subscribe to again although I occaisionally buy a copy from a newsstand is Bicycling.

Subscribe to a bookstore with a good magazine selection and spend time each month grazing at the racks. Eventually you'll find one you keep coming back to. It will take at least three copies to find if you can live with it as a subscription.

Cycle Sport is great - a little more expensive and more difficult to find but great articles/interviews/photos

In SA we have two, "Bike Magazine" and "Bicycling". We do get other magazines (at 10 times the price 🙁 )

Im not sure where you are located, but "Ride" is an australian mag that comes out 4 times a year and is a delight to read. Check it out at www.ridemedia.com.au

I'm located in South Africa. Our Ride Mag comes out 10 times a year. Owner and staff are all SA and some few Pro Cyclists.

BTW, looking at yours it seems that "Ride" mags all over the world have good quality. I prefer it to the Bicycling (SA Edition).

I agree, Ride is a great magazine in Australia and Bicycling is pretty good to.

My favourite is ProCycling even if it is a bit British biased. The feature pictures each month are fantastic and the standard of articles is very high. Also has a really good road test section every month.

ProCycling and CycleSport are both British and very good - about $50 for US 1-year subscription. ProCycling would be my choice by a hair. Chris Boardman does the bike reviews and he hates everything! Nothing is good enough for him, pretty funny.

Here in Europe I think the best magazine is "Bicisport" from Italy. A very good articles with a lot of information. For example, in the number of December, there are almost 300 pages with 5 great articles about Worlds Champions of Hamilton: report of Igor Astarloa in Ermua (his hometown), analysis of Ballerini, interview with Bettini and Bartoli, ... Great magazine.
Also (of the same editorial) "Cicloturismo", with climbs, routes... in Europe.
In France, "Velo" and "Miroir du Cyclisme".
In Spain "Ciclismo a Fondo" and "Meta2Mil".
But I recommend "Bicisport".

is bicisport available in english? or should i improve my italian?? 🙂

Cycle Sport is an excellent pro cycling magazine but sometimes I get bored with the layout as they work on a very set formula.

Procycling is excellent, but again focusses on pro cycling. The in depth articles and interviews are always well presented. The review performed each month is excellent but only one bike gets reviewed and it is usually a pro team bike (often not available to the public in the same form tested). Chris Boardman and Marcel Wust do a lot of the testing and are pretty critical - but if you are to spend that sort of money on a bike it better be damn near perfect.

CyclingPlus is a more general cycling magazine. However they review numerous high-end and other bikes and components and their comments are generally very accurate. For a gear junky this is a fantastic magazine to see what is best and new on the market.

Bicycling is generally poor. However, a few articles of value appear every now and then. Most recently, the article on Graeme Obree was worth a read.

Velonews again focusses on pro cycling and I don't believe it is of the same standard as the British magazines (Procycling and Cycle Sport).

Ride is a solid all round magazine if it is available where you live. Generally focusses on local news and usually includes interesting articles on nutrition or other areas that are of interest to recreational/semi-competitive cyclists. As far as I know, Ride is only available in South Africa and Australia and is probably published by unrelated companies, although the content focus appears similar.

So if you are looking for a pro cycling mag go with Procycling or Cycle Sport (toss a coin to decide which or get the cheapest). If you are looking for a general cycling magazine get CyclingPlus or Ride (if available).

I discovered Cycle Sport in 1996 and since then it has always been my favourite current magazine, even if Procycling did enter the market in 1999. I dont even bother looking at other magazines because these magazines cover what I want to know - the professional cycling circuit. Having said all that though, lately I have just been buying both of these magazines, just for the sake of buying the magazines.

Speaking of magazines, does anyone know when Winning bicycle racing illustrated went out of business - I assume it was in 1997 sometime? If you know, please let me know of the exact issue they ended with - I am trying to collate my own Winning collection.
