  1. Hello all. I'm moving to Portland (the one on the west coast), and am looking for any info from
folks regarding good ethnic grocers in the area. I know there's a chinatown, so the chinese stuff is
out of the way, but anyone know of a good Indian and/or Middle-Eastern grocery store that's not too
far from downtown (preferably near the MAX since I plan on being a public transportation bum).

Also, any recomendations for good eateries are appreciated. Not the stuff that all the guides
recomend, but little mom-and-pop places. I'm in Phoenix and we've got an over-abundance of mid-
eastern food, so I really hope I can find some good hummus and falafel up there. Is there an
    Ethiopean restaurant in the area?

    Tnx, ~Deepak

    There are two:

JARRAS ETHIOPIAN RESTAURANT HOT & SPICY FOOD 1435 SE HAWTHORNE BLVD, PORTLAND, OR 97214 Phone:
    (503) 230-8990

MUDAI ETHIOPIAN RESTAURANT 801 NE BROADWAY ST, PORTLAND, OR 97232 Phone: (503) 287-5433

In Oregon, the leading minority is Hispanic, followed by African-American and Asian and fairly small
scatterings of other groups many of whom reside in Portland. Yes, there are several places with
excellent food from the Middle east and India, but I also love the Asian and "wet mop" BBQ as well.
Portland is the only large city in the state, but it does have some very nice farmers markets and
ethnic shops (my sister is one block down from a great Vietnamese grocery). Most folks tend to be
rather laid back and easy going and the transit system is fairly good with more expansion in the
    next several years.

One good suggestion is to start queries on yellowpages.com and check out the student union at the
Portland State University. Good luck on finding a place to live.

Uwajimaya. Beaverton. I seem to recall that it is the #151 bus from downtown. In any case you can
find the address in google and the bus route from the trimax site.

I really like Syun Izakaya on Lincoln in Hillsboro. Get off at the next to the last westbound MAX
stop. About a 5-10 minute walk.
