It seems like strange advice to me. Aspirin is pretty well proven. Vitamin E is more speculative in
its benefits and I don't believe works the same way. But seek other opinions beyond mine.

I'm not sure. Information from clinical trials tells that aspirin is more effective than vitamin E.
But vitamin E may have its benefits, too. One trial showed benefit from taking time release vitamin
C _and_ vitamin E twice a day. It may be advisable to choose a vitamin E supplement which in
addition to alpha-tocopherol contains also gamma-tocopherol and other tocopherols, preferably also
tocotrienols.
50 mg of vitamin E sounds a bit low when used as supplement. Usually one takes about 200-400 mg/d.

disease in users of vitamin E supplements.
Some possible reasons for this are discussed in:

not enough to protect from heart disease. 200 mg seem to be a reasonable amount to take.
If you decide to take a supplement, make sure that the vitamin E comes from a natural sources.
Synthetic vitamin E is less effective and is probably a waste of money.
Bottomline:
Research suggests that vitamin E can reduce the risk of coronary heart disease, at least in primary
prevention. So does aspirin. However, as both probably don't work by the same mechanism, there seems
to be no reason why someone should not take aspirin when they take vitamin E. So you might want to
consider taking both.

I was advised by my doctor that 50 mg a day of this Vitamin E is better than an aspirin a day.Is there any truth there?

Vitamin E can might enhance the antiplatlet effect of aspirin. While this would perhaps offer better
protection against cardiovascular events, it might also increase the risk of hemorrhagic strokes. So
if want to take both at the same time you should consult a doctor first.
