Velocity rims - Are they any good?

I've been using a Velocity rear wheel for a while and it's been fine (got it from my LBS, they had
to order it in from QLD). It was only $80 so I'm sure it's nothing special. The spoking seems
conventional.

They've been holding my fat butt above the road for a some time now, nothing wrong with them. I have
the "Fusion" rims which are slightly aero in profile but heavy enough not to crumble under me.
Velocity rims seem to be really popular in the USA too. Dunno if that's because they're good or
because they are cheap :-) I don't think I'd hesitate to get them again.. and they are AUSSIE!

I've got Velocity deep section rims on my track bike (front radially spoked, back three cross, but with Durace style hub flanges). They've taken a few hard falls & chain mangling episodes (as is the way on the track) and the rims found their way back into shape with no dramas at all. No complaints from me.

How come you can't buy them direct if they're Aussie made. The don't even have an Aussie website.
They don't give a clear indication of what's available here in Ozz.

I have some velocity rims - now about 7 years old - have worked well. Havent been used much because
I bought them as a light pair to use in races only.

Ask the same question on an American list. Some Aussies have a real cultural cringe on locally made
products, and pay huge money for something European. We see this in cars as well as bicycle wheels.

Based on this thread, would people recommend a wheelset based ona velocity rim? I'm just starting to
look around, have mavics atm, but no brand preference to speak of so if something else is
better/cheaper (and aussie made is good) then why not.

A lot of companies do that. You just buy them through their outlets, i.e. most LBSs. They might not
want to run a retail outlet or online store, etc - machining is their thing perhaps?

We use Velocity rims on our Santana Tandem and they seem to hold up just fine. Steve Hogg at pedal pushers built up a light weight set using 36h DeepV's and Chris King hubs and I have built a touring set using 48h Dyads with Hope hubs.
We have a rolling weight of 170Kg

Geography is important if I want to buy Australian or don't want to send my credit card details
overseas. It also helps with internet searches if I'm looking for Australian sites only.

It costs twice as much to register an .au and you must have a business (not a problem for these
guys), though I agree with your last point.

I did see the Koala but there was still no link to anything Australian. Also I felt that the range
on offer was tailored to the American market and didn't represent all the products from Velocity,
I've since found this to be true. There is no price info on the wheels or rims so maybe they're too
expensive anyway.
