Basil and olive oil

On pasta. Use it to dip bread in and add a bit of fresh grated parm. Brush it on home made pizza
crust before adding the toppings. Brush it on sliced bread and add minced garlic or garlic salt
before broiling for garlic bread. Use it in salads. Drizzle on meaty italian sandwiches.

I went off basil some years back after endless pesto-making sessions in the fall. Now, I use fresh,
and dried, sage almost exclusively.

Top this: when I moved from a house in California to an apartment in Chicago last August, I potted
both of the basil plants growing in my garden and brought them across the country in my car. They're
now growing on the window sill pretty happily.

Awesome. :-) I have to replant them every year as they die back.

Do you prevent them from blooming? Basil usually only lives for one year then you have to re-seed.

The summer before last I bought a very nice basil plant to repot in an outdoor container. I did so
and it was growing very nicely and thick until I got myself a chihuahua puppy.The puppy ate the
basil plant down to the roots when I was not looking.

I never did get another basil plant to grow as nicely as that one had since.

They die outside in the winter near San Francisco, although it rarely freezes. The cold does it.
With moderate amounts of warmth and light, though, they're perennial. These plants wintered over
once before I brought them east.

I have to pinch them back constantly. Even now.
