It really depends on the distance that you intend to travel of course...but what things do you carry with you on your cycling rides. For me, I mostly carry just water and money. For many miles, my area is well populated and so I don't have much of a deserted countryside to force me into carrying other gears and stuff.

Water is an excess baggage for me, seriously, because I bike in semi-urban places where stores are almost everywhere. Aside from that, most main roads here have street vendors selling cold water bottles. Isn't it a nice place to ride? What I bring with me is, of course, my purse because money is important anywhere you go. And not to forget my phone because that is the next important thing for us travelers.

I also prefer to go to places that have nearby stores or eateries and other amenities. I always consider convenience above anything else that would explain it why I almost always find myself in city rides. I do not like bringing a few things regardless if these are handy or not as I tend to be forgetful.

It depends where I'm going, but I almost always carry one of those skinny little cycling backpacks. I've usually got an extra water bottle, a small bike pump, a patch kit and a couple miscellaneous repair items. Other than that just the basics like my wallet, keys, and phone. If we're planning on a longer ride I'll bring some snacks as well, especially since we always tend to stay out later than we had planned.
When I'm riding around town or commuting I usually just take my purse, which has all the typical junk.

Good Lord, I'm as much of a packrat on my bike as anywhere else
Short rides, very local rides, basics are $/ID, electronics, first aid, basic repair.
Long treks necessitate more "stuff"'including usually my iPad and often some additional clothing if weather changes are anticipated.
-
The standard stuff that I carry with me is my phone, keys, wallet and some water, but that's for the longer rides though.
On my shorter night time rides I take just my keys and phone with me.

Well, basically I do the same thing that you do. I only carry money though. And I may carry my umbrella in case there is rain and I need stop somewhere.

Will it goes without saying, that I would bring my phone. It can also be a source of distraction though for many riders, and may even lead to accidents. It's best never to text whether with one hand or 2 hands while riding. Carry your headsets so that you can answer your phone in case of a call.

We ride for fitness and exercise. So riding sections of decent length before having to stop makes my ride enjoyable. Plus being self sufficient is something all riders should be so I carry what I think are the basics as far as tools. We ride about 30 miles before our first stop so I carry 2 water bottles.
----------------------------
Frame pump
2 spare tubes
tire levers
spoke wrench
baggy with energy drink mix
2 power bars
individual allen wrenches (easy slip into seat pack zipper compartments)
Couple of bucks
---------------------------------Cell phones are not a necessity so I only take one if I am on a long ride through tough terrain if I am riding solo.
On a tough ride, like a climb up a mountain road in 89+ temps, i may tuck a 3rd water bottle into a jersey pocket when there is no water available along the course.
And of a course a point and shoot camera, got to have a camera!
