  1. Ok now that I have seen the replies from you racer bike boys averaging 32.4 ks, so what about a
mountain bike with smaller wheels, what would that be equivalent too, as compared with your 32.4.

Thanks again, and I promise this is the last post about average speed

  2. Pete,

I find that my average on the MTB is usually higher than on the roadie...

to the tune of anywhere from 12-13 km/h... has me buggered as to why...

Sounds like a computer and/or user problem ;-)

If this occurs over the exact same course it may also mean that you're not riding the roadie
properly! If I flog for an hour on the MTB on dirt tracks/roads I'm lucky to average 20kph+. The
same sort of effort on the roadie returns 27kph+. I've yet to try slicks on the MTB over the road
course, but without trying I know that the roadie is just much faster. It has to do with gearing.

  4. Same road, and the computers are calibrated correctly for the tyres fitted, MTB is running slicks...

road bike average is up about 7-8 km/h since I raised the handle bars, by flipping the stem...

  5. my average speed (to work) would be about 14-15 mph on a mountain bike with slicks(cant figger out
how to change to kilometers) my average speed on the way home about 10 mph (its uphill a little and
Im tired at the end of the day) Stephen

15 Mph would be about 24kph which is not too bad on a MTB,I guess it may

depends on how long that the ride isover what time.

your 10 mph = 16 kph, still nothing really wrong with that either......as long as it's enjoyable

My experience with average speed on MTB vs Road bike over same course with slicked MTB is 10% slower
on MTB. Given the slicks we are down to weight and air drag as the ket factors. If I try the same
course on nobbies I will lose a further 10%. Approx. 30kph road, 27kph slick and 24kph nobby.

  8. Holy Mackerel guys,

You must live in flat country. Here in the hills its more like, Slicks 21kph, knobbies 18kph, then
again I weigh 100kg. No road bike to compare.

I reckon the slicks are worth around 4 to 5kmh in terms of speed for effort.

That must not be true for competition riders otherwise you would find that they would throw their
rodies in the lake and start using MTB's as they would have an advantage.

  10. I have made only a single point comparison, so it may not be very accurate.

I commute to work. Going to work in the morning is basically the faster leg. Before, when riding on my hybrid, I got the average of 26 kmh. On my road bike I get 29 kmh. Before X-mas I tried my new MTB (with Knobbies), and my average was 23.5 kmh.

Just the side note: The single ride with the MTB was not with pushing to the limit, and so is the figure with the roadie. The figure with the hybrid WAS with pushing really hard. So my expectation is that the hybrid falls closer to the MTB instead of the mid-way.
