Recently I have begin a life changing path where I have reached my first goal of going from 287 pounds down to 174 pounds which has helped me loads with my health. Now with that my goal as been reached and have achieved the healthy life style diet wise etc I am wanting to further that by getting into cycling. We have a lot of road cycling groups in my area and would like to be apart of one in the future but don't know where to start for a "Beginner" Road bicycle and I don't have the largest budget atm so any recommendations would be grateful and second if I should go used or buy a new bike from the get go.
Alittle more info if it helps id I am 5'7" and have a leg length of 29"
I am also curious as to what is a good bike for someone who has not owned a bicycle since their pre teenage years. I am very fit and love to run and play soccer, however I am absolutely clueless as to which bike I should purchase for short distance road travel (to work) that has good performance but is relatively affordable for someone with a middle class income.
Same here, I have only owned one 100$ Wallmart Mountain Bike before, and am looking to really get started. What first bikes did you guys have that did a good job to handle your everyday activities (cycling to work, short distance travels to a friends house and so on)?
Have you stopped into your local bike shop? They will be able to help you out with sizing. I say go stop into a few in your area, write down the bikes they recommend then come back here and let us know your findings. Check out the Diamondback Insight 1 as a start.
Is it fine to buy a cycle with gears and disc brakes? Does it still give exercise to the body? Well, I'm overweight and I like outdoor cycling than walking and am new to it, in the sense I never rode it for weight loss. So, do you advise me to buy a bike with gears, as I don't have a great cardio fitness to romp it away, right from word go.

Congrats on the weight loss, that's a huge achievement.
As for getting started, take a look at the local cycling clubs. Many will be linked one of the local bike shops in some way or other and as such those shops will likely offer a discount for members. Another way to get a bike cheaper than retail price is to go for last years (or even the year before) closeout models. If you're new and just looking to try things out there's no real need to spend thousands on a bike.
