I am a new member to the site but have been a keen cyclist for many a year now. In the last few years have taken it more seriously including a few coasts to coast. I would like a bit of advice if possible.
I plan next year to do the Tourmalet but want to try and ensure my bike is geared up for it. I keep reading varying sites about how best to set up the gears. Mine are currently 12-23, is this sufficient. I am fairly fit and am aware of the type of nutrition and training I need to do but just wanted some help regarding my bike set up. Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Speaking as one who has never done this climb I can only go on what I have done that is similar. At an average of 7.4% I would say your set up is sufficient but if it were me I would have a 25 or lower gear to grind out this climb. I do have a friend that has done this climb a few times but not sure what set up he used. It really does depend a lot on the individual and their skill level.
Jim I would look at changing to a 28 if possible. A compact 34/48 front chainring would allow a much easier peddle cadence and the climbing in general easier. The tourmalet is an iconic climb and one to be savoured. I have done it twice, once in 35 degree heat and once on a very dark day! Fog, rain, wind and cold! Not pleasant! Enjoy the experience.
